Product Description

Product Description
Published to coincide with the launch of Giscard D'Estaing's new European Constitution in November, this work suggests that the United States of Europe has been based on a colossal confidence trick.

About the Author
Christopher Booker has written for the Sunday Telegraph since 1990. He was the founding editor of Private Eye, to which he still contributes. His previous books include several on modern history, including The Neophiliacs, The Seventies, The Games War and A Looking Glass Tragedy. He is currently completing a book on the psychology of storytelling, due to be published by Continuum next year.
Dr Richard North was until recently research director for the Europe of Democracies and Diversities group in the European Parliament, and is now senior research fellow for the European Foundation. 1.0 out of 5 stars The Secret History of the European Union, 6 Feb 2004
This is a superbly researched and detailed account of Britain's political relationship with Europe. Columnist Christopher Booker and former Brussels researcher Dr. Richard North, are uniquely qualified to reveal a remarkable story of nothing less than lies about the European Union from Britain's own leaders. To many this is not exactly a new conclusion, but the authors have provided convincing evidence with a thorough and fascinating description of the major players and the crucial events.

The book's most important theme is that the European Union has been from its inception, a politically motivated project aimed at integration. Europe has been a construction of remote, idealist technocrats, aware that their project could only succeed by deception since the people would not accept the gradual elimination of the nation state. As a necessity this creation was profoundly and irreversibly undemocratic and even corruption has not been allowed to obstruct progress towards uniting Europe. The European Commission has acted as a successful engine of integration using every crisis as an excuse to advance integration from a purely trading area to introducing a single currency, common foreign policy and defence, and harmonised criminal justice. The extent of collusion by British politicians is amazing. Not only have they failed to protect Britain's interests, but have often deceived the people as to the effect of their decisions. Thus "The Great Deception" is scathing when it finds examples of one of them deliberately and blatantly lying.

A major contribution comes from the book's description of the real damage which has been done to Britain by the otherwise academic "loss of sovereignty". Laws written to benefit usually France and Germany have been strictly enforced in Britain at the expense of our industry and our traditional trading advantages. Increased trade has benefited Europe, but not Britain, and economic growth has never matched that of the US.

Despite its conclusions "The Great Deception" does not simply repeat euro-sceptic assertions. It is a comprehensive and authoritative history of the EU built up from numerous original sources and supported with extensive references. Although very detailed it remains very readable and must be highly recommended for anyone interested in really understanding Britain and the European Union.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading, 1 Mar 2004

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Complex yet accessible, it tells what some might assume to be a dry story in a compelling, compulsive manner. For those of you who want to see behind the headlines and get the truth behind officialdom's lies, this is your book. It should be in every home in the country. It's just a pity that sloppy proof-reading let several minor literal and punctuation errors through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite simply a truly remarkable book, 11 May 2004
I would like to echo the comments made by "tandoori" and "david_winn". I also feel that those who really care about their future, and that of their children, should most certainly read this book - and learn.
NOTE: LOOKING AT HIS GLOWING REVIEW, MR WINN CLEARLY MEANT TO RATE THIS BOOK 5 STARS - NOT 1!
