"King Crimson is, as always, more a way of doing things. When there is nothing to be done, nothing is done: Crimson disappears. When there is music to be played, Crimson reappears. If all of life were this simple". Robert Fripp

King Crimson was conceived in November 1968 and born on January 13th 1969 in the Fulham Palace Cafe, London (Fripp/Ian McDonald/Greg Lake/Michael ... Read more in Amazon's King Crimson Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Vindication for artists control of material 11 Jan 2008
Format:Audio CD
With this release and the companion Vol 2 what is obvious is that King Crimson from this era were primarily a live band and that the 3 studio albums from this period(Larks Tongue in Aspic,Starless & Bible Black and Red)were in comparison rather muted affairs.

The material from this era had a lot of improvisation which is why the live format is/was a much better representation of this incarnation of the band.

Over the last 15 years Robert Fripp has overseen a fantastic re- appraisal of Crimson ouput via a variety of formats many thru the Collectors Club. Now previously hard to obtain recordings are becoming widely available-somethiing that would never happen on a major record label.

All of the releases by King Crimson over the last 15 years have been subject to the same high quality control standards and continuity is provided via the superb artwork by PJ Crook-an oft overlooked area which is also misunderstood by many record labels.

In conclusion these 2 releases are a testament for artistic integrity and artistic control (as well as awesome material!)and should be seen as an example for all serious recording artists to aspire to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best KC Ever? 8 Feb 2011
Format:Audio CD
This starts with the premise that you know and love, primarily, Larks Tongues in Aspic. Most of the material on this and Vol2 cover LTIA extensively. However don't let that be a problem for you. Like Frank Zappa, Fripp surrounds himself with top class musicians and this is one of the finest Fripp bands IMO. Supreme and technical playing shines through and its interesting to compare the different treatments of the same songs where they occur. If you love live albums, this is a must for you.
It does take some listening to, like a lot of KC so approach it gently if its your first time. If its a gap in your extensive KC collection, don't delay; as someone else commented, these albums are a steal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crimson at their best 30 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The roar of the mighty Crimson at it's very best. At this price this is a steal. This was one of the best line ups and this is very strong material played well and recorded impeccably. The two Great Deceiver sets are essential listening I did not buy them in their original box set as the price put me off, at the current price just do it, you will not regret it,

5.0 out of 5 stars King Crimson fans have no excuse not to have this 22 July 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is essentially essential. Of all the King Crimson live albums, this one is at the top of the heap for me. Many people will argue that the seventies Crimson King was the best and/or most progressive lineup, and this album is surely an argument for that. There are really few, if any, flaws here. The playing is masterful, the interplay is top notch, and, perhaps above all, the music is exciting and relentless, constantly flowing with great ideas and moments that really speak the wonders of progressive rock. For all intents and purposes, consider this a five star rating without the actual five star rating. Extremely recommended.
