This classic exploration of the Goddess through time and throughout the world draws on religious, cultural, and archaeological sources to recreate the Goddess religion that is humanity's heritage. Now, with a new introduction and full-colour artwork, this passionate and important text shows even more clearly that the religion of the Goddess – which is tires to the cycles of the women's bodies, the seasons, the phrases of the moon, and the fertility of the earth – was the original religion of all humanity.
Monica Sjöö is well known in Europe as the foremost artist and theoretician of the re-emerging Goddess religion. Forty-four of her own works illustrate this volume.
Barbara Mor is an American poet and former poetry consultant for "Woman Spirit" magazine. Her writings include 'Mother Tongue' and 'Winter Ditch and Other Poems'
"This is an abundant and powerfull book that . . . presents a vivid picture of the tragic consequences caused by the savage priests of savage patriarchy. It forcefully shows that the matristic religion, which lasted many millennia before the partriachy, provides an indispensable key to an understanding of the human experience. 'The Great Cosmic Mother' . . . will reach the hearts and minds of many readers."
MARIJA GIMBUTAS, professor emerita of archaeology at U.C.L.A. and author of ' The Language of the Goddess' and ' The Civilization of the Goddess'
"A work that both inflames and inspires . . . a profound influence in modern feminist thought."
BARBERA G. WALKER, author of 'Women's Encyclopaedia of Myths and Secrets'
"A substantial and important contribution to feminist scholarship and theory – and a fascinating work to read, as well"
ROBIN MORGAN
"In a voice that is both passionate and poetic. ['The Great Cosmic Mother'] tells us of an earlier time when our Great Mother was still worshipped, a time we need to understand if we are to create a better future."
RIANE EISLER, author of 'The Chalice and the Blade'

A compelling read and brilliant reference work,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Great Cosmic Mother: Rediscovering The Religion Of The Earth (Paperback)
Although I'm personally convinced that feminine divinities were hugely important in prehistoric times - at least, compared to today - I've grown slightly suspicious of many attempts at 'feminist prehistories'. Often they just seem to swing from one extreme to the other, replacing an all-powerful male god with and all-powerful goddess. I think Monica Sjoo often treads close to this territory, but here the acheivement of her collaboration with Barabara Mor far transcends any undue bias she has. I read this with a very careful eye for anti-male sexism, but found next to nothing that could be described as that. Actually, most of this makes profound sense, particularly the arguments about shamanism being, originally, the domain of women (the psychophysical fact of menstruation is the key here, as was shown in Penelope Shuttle and Peter Redgrove's brilliant 'The Wise Wound'). All in all, a terrific book.

a feminine masterpiece,
This review is from: The Great Cosmic Mother: Rediscovering The Religion Of The Earth (Paperback)
This book is obviously a labour of love, an important and powerful book.
I'm going to unashamedly quote from other reviewers of this book because they have already said it so well, starting with: The authors seamlessly integrate every branch of the social sciences - drawing heavily on anthropology and also on biology, history, comparative religion - you name it. Much theory is presented as fact, but this actually so in all works of scholarship. Dubious? Take a look at "The Hidden History of the Human Race" by Cremo, which does a tremendous job of exposing the high degree of subjectivity that is involved in screening and evaluating evidence of the presence and lineage of modern humans. It credibly calls into question the established timeline and path of human evolution. The open-minded nature of its approach is unusually refreshing in a field typically defined by unreasonably hardened opinions and condescension. Anyway, back to this book, which is intelligent, lovingly written, insightful, well researched, and remarkable in the interdisciplinary nature of its scholarship. It is a precious and rare source of validation for the feminine force, the co-creator of the universe, an adventure in discovery. It is a unique and critical examination and radical deconstruction of patriarchal religion and the devastating effects it has had on humanity and the natural world. A must for all critical thinkers.

When God was a Woman,
This review is from: The Great Cosmic Mother: Rediscovering The Religion Of The Earth (Paperback)
This is a perennial classic, a reference book I constantly refer to. Along with Merlin Stone's "When God Was a Woman", this book should be read by everyone who wishes to understand and redress the imbalance between the sexes.
Monica Sjoo is an important female scholar, and this is an important feminist tome.
