Product Description

Synopsis
Buddhism has long held that all life forms are sacred and considers kindness and compassion to be the highest virtues. Moreover, Buddhism explicitly includes animals in its moral universe. The Great Compassion studies the different strains of Buddhism and the sutras that command respect for all life. Norm Phelps, a long-time student of Buddhism and acquaintance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, answers the central questions of whether Buddhism demands vegetarianism or whether the Buddha ate meat. He is not afraid to examine anti-animal statements in Buddhist law - particularly the issues of whether Buddhists in non-historically Buddhist countries need to keep or to jettison the practices of their historical homelands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compassionate author great book., 9 Jun 2009
By Mr. S. Felix - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am a zen buddhist and I wanted a book that combined animal rights and buddhism together. This book did that with such ease and grace. While the author is a tibetan buddhist this did not interfere with my zen buddhist beliefs. I have read many buddhist books and many of them seem to ignore the fact that buddha was a vegetarian who advocated a vegetarian diet. While some may argue that the buddha stated in the pali canon that his disciples could eat meat so long as it was not killed for them, with furher research into the scripts reveal that buddha clearly stated "I do not permit meat eating".Norm Phelps brings up an excellent point. Animals are slaughtered in the anticipation that people will eat thier flesh,so all animals are killed for the tongue. Wether you directly kill the animal or indirectly you are participating in the slaughter of that animal. You would do good to stop funding the slaughter of animals, so go vegan.

Norm Phelps does an outstanding job in putting all the confusions and misunderstandings aside. Most western buddhist have an abundance of excuses of why they eat meat ranging from that the buddha himself ate meat, to animals in factory farms are there due to thier karma, so killing them is helping thier karma. Norm phelps goes on to say that this is like seeing a person by the road dying and telling them "Its your karma,I wont help relieve your suffering, you just die a painful death".

Another absurd statement made by some buddhist is that carrots are no more different from a cow. So killing a cow is no different from killing a carrot. Cows have a brain and a central nervous system so they are capable of feeling pain.v Plants on the other hand have no brain or nervous system so they cannot feel pain. To compare a cow with a carrot goes to show the urgency of some buddhists to hold on to the craving of dead flesh.

To think that monks eat dead flesh is disturbing, especially buddhist monks. Animals ranging from a fly to an elephant, from an ape to a human, are sentient beings and as sentient beings we are capable of feeling pain. Use your life to help others especially the suffering of 48 million animals who are slaughtered for food.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO BUDDHISTS AND NON BUDDHISTS.

May all sentient beings have happiness and the causes of happiness, may they all be free suffering and the causes of suffering.

Peace.
