Product Description

Product Description

Great Commanders of the Modern World is a sumptuous chronological survey of the 25 greatest commanders of the modern world. Compiled by an distinguished team of historians (including such names as Antonia Fraser, Saul David and Stephen Brumwell) working under the general editorship of Andrew Roberts, Great Commanders of the Modern World is an authoritative and beautifully illustrated account of the lives and careers of the 25 greatest military commanders of the period. Every commander is profiled in a concise and informative 3000-word article which not only brings its subject vividly to life via a lively, fact-driven narrative, but also analyses and assesses his tactical and strategic gifts. As accessible and informative as it is rigorous and scholarly, Great Commanders of the Modern World is the perfect introduction to its subject for the layperson - but also a stimulating and thought-provoking read for those with greater knowledge of military history. With its companion volumes, focusing on the great commanders of the ancient, medieval and early modern eras, it forms an indispensable guide to the greatest generals the world has seen.

From the Back Cover

What tactics did Montgomery employ to defeat Rommel at El Alamein? How did General Giap's Viet Minh troops inflict defeat on a French army at Dien Bien Phu, despite the massive artillery superiority of their opponents? What was the secret behind George S. Patton's masterly control of armoured units? In Great Commanders of the Modern World, Andrew Roberts has assembled some of our most distinguished historians (including such names as Michael Burleigh, Simon Sebag Montefiore and Richard Overy) to provide an authoritative account of the lives and careers of the 24 great military commanders of the period, from Erich Ludendorff to John Pershing, Heinz Guderian to Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Ivan Konev to Moshe Dayan. As accessible and informative as it is rigorous and scholarly, Great Commanders of the Modern World is the perfect introduction to its subject for the general reader, but also a stimulating and thought-provoking read for those with greater knowledge of military history. Along with the other volumes in the Great Commanders series, it is an indispensable guide to the greatest generals the world has seen.

Lightweight essays 5 Dec 2011

First, this is not quite correctly titled - it's not Commanders, it's Land Commanders. No sailors or airmen it seems. The bigger problem is that the individual essays are quite thin, on the level of what one would right in a mid/upper college level course. Biographical details, career highlights, some positive or negative criticism (lacking citations). Nothing that people familiar with the people being described would not already know.

I guess there is a market for these volumes, for those with a passing interest in historical figures. Perhaps as a means of looking up somebody seen on a TV show or movie (although Wikipedia has more details for many of them). The Kindle price was quite good, so I guess it was an acceptable purchase, but I will not sample the remaining volumes in the series. I would have preferred essays about WHY the people are worth including rather than having that appear in the last few sentences.
