Effectively what may be termed part 1 of a series of books discussing briefly a whole range of military commanders through the ages this work is comprised of short essays by a whole gamut of authors and each one tackles the subject of a great commander. This work covers the period 1479BC through to 453AD and comprises easily digestible basic histories of famous figures such as Ramses II, Cyrus the Great, Leonidas, Alexander the Great, Scipio Africanus and a swathe of others.
As such this really is a primer, an easy airport fodder style of work aimed at those with a general interest in military history for whom a basic knowledge of many of these great war leaders is sufficient. Given that is exactly it's self denoted brief it works quite well. It would not however work well for someone wanting to become a serious student of, say, Pompey. Having said that I'm quite certain that this work will pique the interest of many of its readers to delve deeper into the careers of some of those featured herein and the bibliography at the rear of the book certainly provides fairly useful further reading possibilities for those who are interested in delving deeper.
A perfect gift for a young military history buff or someone with some interest in the subject who is looking for a easily digested work whose format lends itself to being a brisk read.
