Product Description

From the origins of urbanization in Mesopotamia to the global metropolises of today, great cities have marked the development of human civilization. The Great Cities in History tells their stories, from Uruk and Memphis to Tokyo and São Paulo. A galaxy of distinguished contributors evoke the character of each place its people, its art and architecture, its government and explain the reasons for its success. Richly illustrated with photographs, paintings, maps and plans, this volume is nothing less that a portrait of world civilization.

John Julius Norwich has made an interesting selection of great cities - some pleasant surprises - certainly not Eurocentric. Maybe the net was cast too wide and, as a result, no city is given the depth of treatment that one would like. It's a book to dip in to for half an hour rather than for a deep read. Pleasurable nonetheless - light but well written with sound knowledge and good humour.

Amazing bredth. Just enough depth on each city to leave you hungry. Sumptuous illustrations and photographs.

More than 50 cities and no sight of Madrid. I think that being, among other things, the centre of the first modern empire in the world gives Madrid enough credit to be in any book about important cities in history.
