Book Description

21 July 2011
In 50 brief chapters, originally delivered as public audiences to the faithful in St Peter's Square, Benedict XVI offers absorbing, perceptive, and often edifying sketches of some of Christianity's greatest thinkers and writers. The historical circumstances and theological ideas of each are explained.
The book is divided in four parts: The Apostolic Fathers: Witnesses from the first generations after the New Testament; The Patristic Theologians: From councils and controversies, from Origen to Augustine; Early Medieval Thinkers: The beginnings of scholastic and monastic theologies; Later Medieval Thinkers: The flowering of Christian theology in the high Middle Ages.
Benedict discusses the most notable theologians from East and West, along with figures whose primary witness was as ascetics, poets, mystics, and a number of popes, politicians, and missionaries. The historical circumstances and theological ideas of each is explained with the clarity of an experienced teacher. Benedict always has an eye to their deepest religious convictions and struggles as well as to their present importance to the church and Christian life today.

5.0 out of 5 stars a treasure 30 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
This collection of the Pope's talks covers some 70 very different people who over the first 1500 years of the Catholic faith influenced te development of Christian thought and practice. Each talk is quite short (they can read in 10 minutes or an hour depending on the reader's approach ), full of facts and often expressed with great eloquence. They can provide either a source of meditation or a springboard to further study of each person's most significant work. They would also provide a most helpful basis for study groups.
A very valuable contribution the Church's life

Anything written by Pope Emeritus Benedict is totally inspiring. In years - indeed, in centuries to come - his writings will rank with the greats of Christianity. This book carries all the Scripture-steeped erudition and profound knowledge of the message of Jesus Christ being carried through the generations by men and women of exceptional holiness. All is, in my view, evidence that nothing will ever prevent the love of God reaching our ever-troubled world, with its ever changing social and political and ecclesial contexts. This book is as much a reflection of the holiness and giftedness of the writer as it is a record of great Christian souls.
