I collected several LPs in this series during the early 1970s and was delighted to see this CD version appear on the Priory Records website, from whence I bought it.
I put disc 1 on in the car recently and was absolutely blown away by the quality and sheer power of that opening Mozart F minor chord. I simply couldn't stop shivering at the thrill of hearing a "vintage" recording I thought I was unlikely to hear again. I had never, ever before experienced the clarity and quality of recording (yes OK there would have been surface noise on a vinyl LP), which was here achieved on CD. This, together with Noel Rawsthorne's sheer brilliance, made for stunning listening. Much the same can be said of the York Minster recording, on which the Tuba (Mirabilis)really cuts through the rest of the texture in a way I'd not noticed before. I remember my School Music Department had this LP in the 1960s and it never sounded quite as good then as it does now. I look forward to further treats from CD 3 onwards.
This is a boxed set I thoroughly recommend; although I paid more for it than I would have done at Amazon I think it is truly remarkable value for money.
