Rated "pick-of-the best" by Steam Railway magazine and described by Heritage Railway magazine as being in a "different league" to other DVDs, this ten-part series centres around 'road tests' of more than 30 surviving British steam locomotives .... everything from humble tank engines to mighty expresses. It is aimed at the the railway enthusiast and was filmed over the course of a decade as a labour of love by the same professional TV crews who made ITV's "Southern Steam" and BBC's "Real Railway Children." Much of the action is set on the footplate and includes live-action commentary by the drivers and firemen. There's a wealth of footage of engines in action on the mainline at up to 75 m.p.h, including such favourites as Flying Scotsman, the Great Western Kings & Castles, Southern machines like Clan Line and Taw Valley, and the LMS's legendary Black Five. Up to ten cameras were used to record high-speed mainline trips, and there are nostalgic forays onto some of Britain's best-loved preserved lines. A special effort was made to involve railwaymen whose careers began in the days of steam and who are still at work in the 21st century. A stunning record of some stunning machines!
