CD Description

After the critical success of “Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Instrumentals” which was exclusively American, it seemed only logical to compile all the British gems which fell into this category. The latter end of the fifties saw the emergence of what some ‘purest’ aficionados consider, the first seriously good Brit Rock ‘n’ Roll in the form of instrumental hits. Certainly America was the leader in this genre, but the British caught on during the 1950’s producing a large number of highly creditable recordings, many of which are completely forgotten today. This Collection may help to set the record straight with Instrumental and Rock ‘n’ Roll fans alike finding many welcome surprises wandering through these two CD’s. This 61 track showcase lists the great names of the era such as the Shadows, Bert Weedon, John Barry and Chris Barber as well as highlighting a few we don’t quite associate with Rock ‘n’ Roll such as Winifred Atwell, not to mention Victor Silvester & his Rock ‘n’ Roll Rockets, would you believe it. It seems that even Victor Silvester was young and silly once upon a time! Tracks; CD1. The Sleepwalkers. Golden Mile / Bert Weedon. Lonely Guitar / The Shadows. This splendid 2CD set does exactly what they say on the tin. "Great British Rock 'n' Roll Instrumentals Vol.1" rounds up 61 (that's sixty one!) Great British Rock 'n' Roll instrumentals, covering the period 1949 - 1959. Of course, that means that some of the tunes aren't, strictly speaking, rock 'n' roll, but that's a minor quibble on what is a fantastic collection.

Granted, the odd bit of utter rubbish creeps in, but there are so many tunes here that are impossible to track down, that you can forget the odd bit of fluff from Ray Sendit & His Rockey Team. It rounds up most of the big names you'd want and expect to hear, including the Shadows and Bert Weedon, but it's when you hear an unexpected gem like Winifred Atwell's 'Five Finger Boogie' or Don Lang & His Frantic Five's 'Hand Jive Boogie' that the enjoyment level just soars. You shouldn't think twice about buying this, especially at mid-price.

Back in the old days 1950's and 1960's when any record was listened to with great joy and the pop business was in its infancy many a single was released with an instrumental reverse side. I bought this selection with the second series and at this price and for the quantity of tracks included its a great bargain to add to your collection. If you are a serious music collector you should not miss this opportunity many tracks included i have never owned previously and just imagine how much it would cost at seven shillings a pair.

This is an excellent collection, including tracks by the Shadows before they were the Shadows. Not many hits among the tracks, but plenty of nostalgia. Great to see some covers from the old Embassy label (which used to be sold through Woolworths). This is a must have for lovers of fifties rock n roll instrumentals. Informative cover notes.
