This splendid 2CD set does exactly what they say on the tin. "Great British Rock 'n' Roll Instrumentals Vol.1" rounds up 61 (that's sixty one!) Great British Rock 'n' Roll instrumentals, covering the period 1949 - 1959. Of course, that means that some of the tunes aren't, strictly speaking, rock 'n' roll, but that's a minor quibble on what is a fantastic collection.
Granted, the odd bit of utter rubbish creeps in, but there are so many tunes here that are impossible to track down, that you can forget the odd bit of fluff from Ray Sendit & His Rockey Team. It rounds up most of the big names you'd want and expect to hear, including the Shadows and Bert Weedon, but it's when you hear an unexpected gem like Winifred Atwell's 'Five Finger Boogie' or Don Lang & His Frantic Five's 'Hand Jive Boogie' that the enjoyment level just soars. You shouldn't think twice about buying this, especially at mid-price.
