Book Description

1 Aug 2009
This book presents a delightful history of how Christmas has been celebrated in Britain over the past 2,000 years from the legend of Arthur pulling the sword from the stone one Christmas day, to when the Puritan Parliament tried to 'ban' Christmas, through to Charles Dickens' vivid recollections of his boyhood celebrations, and his delight in the present of a jumping frog. Amongst the wealth of stories and personal reminiscences, this book also teaches us how the traditions we now hold so dear came into being, including Mrs. Beeton's recipe for the original Christmas cake (made with a horn of mead), the birth of Christmas carolling, the first ever Christmas tree to be brought to England from Germany by Prince Albert and the origins of the Christmas cracker. This is simply the perfect book with which to celebrate Christmas and all the traditions that surround it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Relax with this at Christmas 29 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover
This is a lovely little book full of great stories of Christmas traditions and Christmas in the past. Researched and written well with stories, memories and traditions from across the UK. Have also read Jane Austen's Christmas and Bronte's Christmas, both books by the same author also very entertaining, providing an insight into where our current traditions came from. The short and distinct chapters mean it's easy to put down and pick up again - good for busy Mums. Perfect Christmas present for a Mum or Grandmother.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected 5 Jan 2013

Not quite what I was expecting but has some interesting articles. This book is a collection anecdotes and extracts from works previously published, whereas I had thought it would be a history of aspects of the British Christmas. Not bad though.
