Format:Kindle Edition
Really enjoyed this book as it was very informative on many aspects of British involvement in the war between the states. Things that you would not normally find in mainstream history books but which are totally relative.

The last word? 10 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
Some while ago, an American friend asked me how close Great Britain came to recognising the Confederacy during the American Civil War. Look as hard as I could, I found only scant coverage in the more recent histories of the time. Then I discovered this book. It is very detailed yet thoroughly readable, extensively researched including copious footnotes and, to my mind at least, seems to be the last word on this subject. I shall not attempt to answer my friend's question here, simply suggest that if you are interested in the answer, then you must read this book.

it was not until British humanitarian sentiment had forced emancipation upon the unwilling sugar planters, in 1833, that the nation was morally free to criticize American domestic slavery. "e;

Meanwhile great emancipation societies, with many branches, all virile and active, had grown up in England and in Scotland. These now turned to an attack on slavery the world over, and especially on American slavery. "e;

"e;
Did Great Britain in spite of her long years of championship of personal freedom and of leadership in the cause of anti-slavery seize upon the opportunity offered in the disruption of the American Union, and forgetting humanitarian idealisms, react only to selfish motives of commercial advantage and national power? "e;
