Book Description

10 Jun 2013
Telling a story of class and taste, aspiration and identity, tapestry series 'The Vanity of Small Differences' saw Turner Prize-winning artist Grayson Perry travel the length and breadth of the UK on safari amongst the taste tribes of Britain. The result is a monumental exploration of the emotional investment we make in the things we choose to live with, wear, eat, read or drive. The six vibrant and highly detailed tapestries presented here bear the influence both of early Renaissance painting and of William Hogarth's moralising series, literally weaving characters, incidents and objects from the artist's research into a modern-day version of 'A Rake's Progress' (1733). Featuring essays by journalist Suzanne Moore ('Guardian', 'The Mail') and Grayson Perry, alongside extensive commentary on each of the tapestries and their making, this book is an essential companion to one of the key contemporary art works of the last decade.

Well, Grayson Perry excelled himself with the tapestries themselves and the book has not let his enthusiasts down either. The book is a wonderful insight into the thought processes of the artist and exceptionally coherently written, but also a work of art in its presentation - truly beautiful cover and the highest quality of illustrations. I will treasure it forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vanity of Small Differences by Grayson Perry 9 Dec 2013

This book shows Grayson Perry's creative processes in designing for his tapestries. The Vanity of Small Differences. I bought it as I had visited his exhibition at the Miro Gallery and had also followed the television series dedicated to the making of the work which was a fascinating insight to Grayson and the people with whom he came into contact while researching the work. The book is an excellent complement to the above, and is beautifully bound with a fabric cover. It is a pleasure to hold and read. It demonstrates Grayson Perry's humour and humanity, and a sharp overview of our modern society. Wonderful.

I loved the TV series last year and can't wait to see the tapestry exhibition so when I saw this book, I was really excited. I ordered the book as a birthday present for an equally enthralled friend (who is a publisher by trade!). The book arrived beautifully shrink wrapped and (seemingly) in great condition so I was delighted to give it to my friend. However, upon opening the book and on closer examination - some of the key pages towards the back had been incorrectly glued and it was impossible to view some of the great images without tearing the page. Such a shame! My friend was v upset as he really loved the book so I have sent the book back to Amazon and requested a new one to replace it - and hope that the 'glue' issue was just a 'one off'.
