Book Description

30 Oct 2012 The Taking
In the future, only one rule will matter: Don't. Ever. Peek. Seventeen-year-old Ari Alexander just broke that rule and saw the last person she expected hovering above her bed - arrogant Jackson Locke, the most popular boy in her school. She expects instant execution or some kind of freak alien punishment, but instead, Jackson issues a challenge: help him, or everyone on Earth will die. Ari knows she should report him, but everything about Jackson makes her question what she's been taught about his kind. And against her instincts, she's falling for him. But Ari isn't just any girl, and Jackson wants more than her attention. She's a military legacy who's been trained by her father and exposed to war strategies and societal information no one can know - especially an alien spy, like Jackson. Giving Jackson the information he needs will betray her father and her country, but keeping silent will start a war.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Unique Alien Book I've Ever Read 5 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
**I got a copy of this book from the Publisher in return for an honest review.

"I won't let ignorance murder the people I love."

Wow. I seriously have no words at all to explain just how amazing this book is. It completely took my breath away with it's serious awesome-ness. This is one of the first sci-fi/alien kind of books that I have read and loved. I have never actually had anything against Alien books I had read a couple and thought they were okay but I had never found one that I had thought was phenomenal until I read Obsidian by Jennifer L Armentrout. That series although sometimes labelled as Paranormal Romance rather than Sci-Fi, really opened my eyes to Alien books and when heard about Gravity I instantly couldn't wait to read it so I just have to say a massive thank you to Entangled Publishing for letting me review an ARC of this book.

Ari's world gives help to the Ancients, a alien species from another planet who need help. She has been brought up knowing only one rule. Don't. Ever. Peek. When Ari looses her patch she just had to break that rule and peek during The Taking. The last think she expects to see is Jackson Locke, popular guy from school, hovering over her bed. See Jackson is an Ancient sent to Earth with a mission and he needs Ari's help. Ari has a decision to make, go along with what she's always known and been taught or help Jackson and prevent a war. But is Ari's decision that simple when she starts falling for Jackson who is obviously hiding something. Will they both be able to survive this dangerous time for both their species and will they survive with their hearts in tact?

I absolutely adored this book. I expected to like it but I never ever imagined that it would blow me away quite as much as it did.

2.0 out of 5 stars Struggled 28 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Many thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for my review copy, this is in exchange for an honest review.

This one started off really exciting but somewhere just after quarter of the way through I stared to disconnect with the characters. Past that point it went off the boil really quickly, which is a real shame as it had such promise. I feel so gutted actually. I was really looking forward to getting my teeth into this one.

The synopsis sounded just up my street, ticked all the boxed. But sadly I won't be carrying on with this series as I barely struggled to finish the first book. And that is not a good sign. I normally find that book one wows me and book two has a hard time following up. But I'm not going to even go there. It took me such a long time to will myself to get through this first book.

I'm afraid I didn't really like the main character Ari and I failed to connect with her.

Sorry Melissa West I didn't like this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sci-fi/Dystopian 30 Aug 2013
By Sarah
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
(Source: Purchased on kindle from Amazon.co.uk)
17-year-old Ari lives in a dystopian society, where every night aliens come to every human's bedroom and suck antibodies from them.
Ari is in training to be the next engineer commander after her father, but doesn't expect to find herself in the middle of yet another war - the aliens claim they're peaceful and want to coexist, but the government wants to get rid of them anyway.
Can humans and aliens coexist? Can Ari be what her parents want her to be? And is she falling for the alien that comes to her room every night?

This was a brilliant sci-fi dystopian, and I really liked it.

Ari was a girl whose parent's had always expected a lot of her, and had been training her since she was tiny, grooming her to become the next Engineer Commander. She trained constantly, and always did what she was told. I liked how when the situation called for it she did what she needed to do, and went against everything that she had ever been taught, because she trusted her gut to know what was really right, even if it wasn't what her parents would want her to do.

I liked the storyline in this book. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting, which was good because it had some really unique ideas. I thought the whole thing about the aliens needing antibodies was very interesting, and I liked how the author managed to mix real-life science with the science of the aliens.
I liked the tension in this book, and I liked how there was both action and romance. The story had good pace and flowed really well, and although there were a couple of points that were maybe a little shaky I was able to look past these because I was enjoying the story so much.
I thought the ending was pretty good, and I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series!
Overall; brilliant sci-fi dystopian story.
9 out of 10.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's an interesting read
I liked the book and gave it a 4/5 mainly because it did drag a bit and I did have to force myself to finish it. But the ending did leave me wanting to read more.
