As stated above, was tempted to rate the product 5 stars just to even out the average score of the product but couldn't bring myself to do it- Think this is a solid 3.5/4 star rated album (at least by Talib Kweli's standards)

Not his best work (which will always be 'Reflection Eternal' in my eyes- Still a classic to this day) but very solid all the same.

Of the 11 tracks, 5 are produced by producers who i'm familiar with- 3 by Oh No, 1 by Statik Selektah and one by the late great J Dilla- This totally goes against the other reviewers argument of the beats being weak- Colours Of You (J Dilla) is classic Dilla, and definitely not a throwaway beat Talib Kweli got his hands on- Possibly my favourite track on the album, so laid back...

There's 9 guest artists on the 11 tracks (5 tracks are guest free, and you could possibly count this as 7 tracks, being as 2 of the guests are only there to sing the hooks on their respective tracks) Cameos from Big K.R.I.T., Raekwon, Black Thought & Rah Digga (remember her??!) are welcome and thankfully its not guest cameo overload.

The lyrical content is nothing you wouldn't expect to hear from a Talib Kweli album; again, not a bad thing at all as he rarely drops a weak verse- Again, i'm going to have to totally go against Martin Crabtree's review where he claimed the lyrics are weak (& he then had the cheek to say the album will appeal to the bling bling middleclasser(???) Since when has Talib Kweli's music EVER been classed as 'bling bling' hip hop?? Idiot)

So to summarise, definitely worth checking out at least once- One of the better hip hop albums of 2014 thus far but by no means the best- Enjoyable all the same!!

Black Star and Reflection Eternal (both albums) are classic Hip Hop records for me, Gravitas is Kweli finally bringing us a solo LP that lives up to his skill and work in the previously mentioned projects. I have always found Kweli's albums enjoyable but never great overall works despite some stella songs within them. Beautiful struggle and Eardrum had a lot of potential but didnt quite propel him to commercial stardom as they should have and susequent albums like Gutter Rainbow or P.O.C were solid records but not as great and cohesive collections. Gravitas although a little shorter on tracks is much more consistant with some great production and a large number of standout tracks like State Of Grace and Violations, Rare Portraits and Wormhole.

Another Dope Album From Kweli 24 Feb 2014
By Hip-Hop-Fan2786 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Gravitas is Kweli's sixth studio album. Just seven months after the Prisoner of Conscious album. The mp3 version of Gravitas was released back on December 13th through the "Kweliclub" website. This time, Kweli chose to ditch the major labels and release the project that he wanted to. On the opener "Inner Monologue" Kweli talks about several things like his new independent grind, how being an artist is modern day slavery and people who pop Mollys. The OhNo produced "Rare Portraits" has Kweli reminiscing about all the accomplishments in his music career, the artists he worked with and he also pays homage to Hip-Hops Golden Era. Even if you're not a fan Talib, you gotta respect all those moves he made, from opening up for Nas And Jay Z to the Black Star album, among other things. Kweli flexes his lyrical muscle on the Black Thought, Rah Digga and AlBe Back assisted "Art Imitates Life". That joint gave me vibes from the Rawkus records days.

Elsewhere on Gravitas, Raewkon the Chef comes though and exchanges verses with Talib on the street single "Violation". "The Wormhole" is an interesting track about the Illuminati and conspiracy theorists. The LordQuest "Demonology" Big KRIT & Gary Clarke Jr is basically about dealing with demons. "Lovers Peak" produced by 6th Sense is a short on verse song where Kweli describes what love is. Overall Gravitas doesn't contain any forced radio songs or out of place cameos. And as always, Kweli's lyrics are gonna be intact like with every album he does. The main setbacks of Gravitas is the lackluster production and weak hooks. Overall, Gravitas is a dope album and it will keep Kweli fans satisfied. He has more creative control and he made the music that he wanted to make, and for that reason alone you should check it out.

Nicely Done 16 May 2014

Talib definitely put in work on this release. Inner Monologue and Art Imitates life are my favorites. All in all an extremely solid effort from a veteran that isn't just phoning it in.

"If skills sold/truth be told/I'd probably be/ Lyrically/Talib Kweli/Truthfully" -Jay Z

Jay Z, one of the most successful rappers in the in the music industry acknowledged Kweli's lyrical genius prowess. What Talib provides in this album should be what plays on the radio waves. Unfortunately, it doesn't. Nevertheless Talib lays down sick rhymes and verses that hit you in the heart and mind. They make you stop and consider the mainstream music and all the crap this is put on display now a days. Pick up a copy and bump it while at home or on a commute somewhere. Talib's verses will not disappoint.
