Book Description

"How to communicate with power, poise and confidence.

Mariella Frostrup, Observer columnist and radio/TV host has chosen Gravitas by Caroline Goyder, Vermilion as one of her summer reads in The Observer ‘The trick to achieving Gravitas, according to its author, Caroline Goyder, is to "fake yourself under pressure", which I'll also be learning more about. If I get through them all by autumn I'll be practically perfect and ready to start afresh on my Observer column readers!’"

Product Description

Have you ever wondered why some people earn attention and respect when they speak and others don't? The secret to their success can be summed up in one word: gravitas.

In this revolutionary new book, leading voice coach and speaker Caroline Goyder reveals how to speak so others will listen. Through simple techniques to build your natural gravitas, you will learn how to express yourself clearly with passion and confidence to persuade, influence and engage listeners. Each chapter guides you step-by-step through practical techniques and exercises to give you the skills for great presentations, productive meetings and persuasive pitches. You'll overcome anxiety, learn how to deal with difficult people and feel calm and in control when public speaking.

An essential tool for the modern workplace, Gravitas will transform the way you think about yourself and your powers of communication.

4.0 out of 5 stars In the Muscle 6 Mar. 2014
Format:Paperback
Yet another ‘how-to-communicate’ book? Yes, but this one is different.

Caroline Goyder is a voice coach at Central School of Speech and Drama. She knows whereof she writes. Gravitas goes beyond that easy watchword, authenticity. It’s not, she says, “about limitless self-esteem and ‘because I’m worth it’. It’s grittier and harder-headed than that.” Goyder understands that, in the words of another guru, “by doing one becomes”. (‘Guru’ in Sanskrit apparently means ‘the weighty one’.)

Gravitas is about knowing what works just as much as about knowing yourself. And your self is physical as well as mental. “The knowledge,” says Goyder, “must be in the body just as much as in the mind.” She talks a lot about letting your understanding drop ‘into the muscle’.

This mind-body relationship is the beating heart of the book.

Take voice production. Goyder explains, simply and clearly, the three vocal registers – head, chest, gut – relating them in a way I hadn’t seen before to the three Aristotelian musketeers: logos (head), pathos (chest), ethos (gut). She’s at her very best when discussing words and speaking: she quotes advice from RADA: “Every thought I have needs a breath / Breathing is also known as inspiration / Therefore I inspire the thought with breath/ Which in turn becomes sound / And with articulation comes speech...”

She brings in plenty of ideas from other people. She’s good on the NLP-derived distinction between association and disassociation. (“If you can write down five beliefs that really fire you up you are well on the road to association – and to igniting the interest of your audience.”) She’s particularly strong on our attitude to time: chronos (clock time: planning, intention) and kairos (being in the moment, attention).

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for confidence building 23 Sept. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Gravitas sounds like a big word, a big deal. It sounds quite intimidating and I probably wouldn't have bought this book if I wasn't already familiar with the author's previous work. I have found The Star Qualities to be so useful over the years and I'm sure Gravitas will become my anchor in a sea of uncertainty.

We communicate everyday, on so many different levels, yet rarely are we taught how to do it effectively. If you have ever struggled to be heard in a meeting, or missed out on a promotion due to shyness, or you just need to speak with more authority over the phone then Gravitas is what you need.

I especially enjoyed the section where Caroline talks about 'the gremlins' - those people who try to undermine your confidence, sabotage you at work, nit-pick at everything or just drain you to the point of exhaustion with their garrulous conversation. Gremlins are the people who feed your anxieties and make your head spin so that you cannot think clearly and they can then hold the floor and work to their own agenda. Not only does this book teach you how to spot the gremlins in your life, it also tells you how to deal with them and neutralize their negative impact. I found this part of the book very reassuring - it's not just me being mean - these kind of people do exist and I have, in the past, invited them into my life. Thankfully I now know what to watch out for.

I have enjoyed reading Gravitas and I am eager to see what Ms Goyder comes up with for her next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical advice 14 April 2014
Format:Paperback
I do a lot of public speaking and a lot of negotiations in my work and I came to this book looking to see how it could help me with this.
And I found tons! Its full of very practical “how to…” tips for all kinds of contexts – there are dedicated chapters for presentations, pitches, interviews and meetings. Its very nicely written too, the author has a nice way with words, and its full of stories and advice from the Ancient Greeks and modern day A-listers alike.
But, of course, its not just work where this kind of thing is useful and I’ve found it’s helped me in pretty much every other area of my life, as well. In retrospect, I think I’ve been on a journey to increase my gravitas all my life and this book has given me a clear map of how to do this.
Excellent book, I know I’m going to be dipping back into it regularly.

This really is a great book and provides another dimension to Caroline's previous book "The Star Qualities". This book is a must read if you are looking at building your broader leadership qualities, style and presence. I have learned a lot from Caroline's books and would highly recommend anyone looking to develop as a leader or even just building your own self confidence. The book adopts a good use of scenarios and role playing which does help bringing to life different techniques. For me this is what gives this book an extra dimension compared to other similar books I have read in the past. If I could give it 6 stars i would!!

This is a really helpful book for anyone who has to face the rigours of making effective, impactful speeches, and as a guide to communicate with authority. Goyder has a deep knowledge of her subject, gained through her practical experience, and wide ranging research. Goyder cleverly draws on the ancient techniques of rhetoric in speech making, but also includes useful contemporary theories across a range of disciplines including psychology and the physical practice and techniques of voice and speech . Goyder's understanding of the psychology behind performance nerves, and how to overcome them is particularly effective. This is a book stuffed full with a variety of extremely helpful and wise advice that will be valuable reading for any professional who aims to communicate with gravitas.
