Product Description

Just because Grave Witch Alex Craft can speak to the dead, doesn't mean she has to like what they have to say . . .

As a private investigator and consultant for the police, Alex has seen a lot of dark magic. But even though she's on good terms with Death himself, nothing has prepared her for her latest case. Alex is investigating a high-profile murder when she's attacked by the ghost she is raising - which should be impossible. Then, someone makes a serious attempt on her life, thwarted only by Death's intervention. You know you're having a bad day when Death is saving your life . . .

To solve this case, Alex will have to team up with tough homicide detective Falin Andrews. Andrews seems to be hiding something, although it's certainly not his dislike of Alex. Despite all that, Alex is going to need his help to navigate the tangled webs of real-world and paranormal politics, and to track down a killer wielding a magic so malevolent, it may cost Alex not just her life, but also her soul . . .

4.0 out of 5 stars I need the next book NOW!!! 1 Nov 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
The first installment of Kalayna Price's new Urban Fantasy series is thoroughly enjoyable - I couldn't put it down.

I loved the world-building, the main character is likeable, the story captured and held my attention and there are the beginnings of a love triangle where both options look very attractive ;)Whilst I would definitely class this as urban fantasy rather than paranormal romance, there are romantic elements to the book.

If I had to describe 'Grave Witch', I would say it has a good dollop of the early Anita Blake books, mixed with handfuls of Kim Harrison's 'Hollows' and Patricia Briggs 'Mercy Thompson' with a small pinch of Stacia Kane's 'Downside' books. In short, a recipe for success!

This book left me impatient for the next in the series and the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I found some of the descriptions in the showdown at the end slightly confusing.

All in all, I thoroughly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not good, it's very good..... 9 Dec 2010
By sharon TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've read Kalayna Price before & enjoyed her 'Bitten Books', but this just blows them out the water. Her cleverly crafted world relys on witches & fae, very tricky, manipulative, there's a dark undertone throughout, & the author drip feeds the puzzle piece by piece, without losing any of the flow, a definate page turner.
Private investigator, Alex Craft, raises shades, they are like the memory of the person, she is able to use her 'grave sight' & power to reanimate the shade for a short time, to tell their story. Alex raises the wrong shade, her family life is screwed, and she has to find & destroy the source before all hell breaks loose.
The writing is tight, a complex storyline that keeps you hooked & characters like a stalking ghost, a cryptic gargoyle, malicious fae and two very different male protagonists with tightly held secrets of their own.I enjoyed this new urban fantasy alot, great escapism and will definately be buying the next in the series. When you look at the plot & premise I could not help but to compare her loosely to a female 'Harry Dresden'. If you like Karen Chance, Linda Robertson, Chole Neill & all of that ilk, you should not be disappointed.
The next book in the series is Grave dance & should be out in the summer 2011.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really Enjoyable 25 Feb 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. The cover is a bit 'meh', so it looks a bit like it might be one of those short, quick and full of sex 'urban fantasy' books.

But it's so much more and I read it in a day.

It's very well researched and planned - with a full compliment of all things faery. Our heroine is Alex Craft, and she uses her magic to raise shades - sort of like ghosts, but not - to help her investigate their deaths. She tries to routinely raise two shades, but has problems, and the story starts from her investigation. We get to meet 'death' who's a friend of Alex's! She also gets a new partner in the form of a new detective who is also investigating one of the deaths she is.

I don't like to give too much away about the story when I'm writing a review, but suffice to say this book is funny, well written, interesting and I'm looking forward to the next one.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Book Geek 11 Aug 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book was pretty good on the whole, especially when you compare it to some of the other urban fantasy books that I've had the misfortune of reading recently. The genre's taken me all over the place in the last few months: I've been addicted, annoyed, disappointed, I've laughed, I've cried, I've ranted and I've recommended. At the very least, Kalayna Price gave me a real urban fantasy story instead of the typical Twilight-style "I'm-so-obsessed-with-you-if-you-leave-me-I'll-die" kind of paranormal romance with a not very exciting mystery story mixed in to try and make the reader think the author actually cares about characters and plot rather than just filling the blanks between the sweet-nothings and sex.

Grave Witch was a decent story with a decent heroine and a whole lot of decently-written supernatural happenings. But... it just wasn't particularly exciting at all. I found it an okay way to pass a lazy evening but it didn't get my pulse racing once, didn't make me feel the need to go out and buy Grave Dance, just generally failed to move me in any kind of way. The first book of a series should sell the rest of the series to you - but it didn't.

So, what did I like? I liked Alex Craft (the heroine) for the most part and, I never thought I'd say this in a review, Death is sexy. No, that's not me finally going over the edge and taking up necrophilia, that's me talking about the jeans-clad, dangerous and amusing Grim Reaper that is always looking over Alex's shoulder. I thought he would have made a much more interesting love interest (yes, I know how weird that sounds) than Falin Andrews. Andrews seemed alright, a bit of the old serious and broody kind of attractive... until we find out he's got really long, platinum-blond hair. How many times?

4.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, great story 26 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am really glad I picked up this book. Alex Craft is quickly becoming one of my favourite female leads.
The story is well paced and exciting, it was quite funny at times and is a good premise.
It is quite unpredictable, and as it is based on magic and ghosts you can never guess how things will get resolved.
I have read all the books in the series now, and am looking out for the next one.
