The story is the same as that of Handel's opera of the same name. The selection of voices and voice timbres and range is superb. Janet Williams as Cleopatra is stunning, as is Robert Gambill as Tolomeo and Jeffrey Francis as Lentulo. Lynne Dawson sings beautifully though lacking a bit of dramatic clout. Iris Vermillion whose voice is a little rough compensates and gives a spectular performance with her dramatic authority in the role of Cesare. The orchestral playing and conducting are splendid especially the harpsichord playing which is spectacular. This is one of the all time best opera recordings and will become one of your favorites if you love baroque opera.

Excellent service from the vendor, even though the product was delayed in shipping due to the Christmas season. The vendor really cared, although it was not his responsibility. The CD itself is marvelous.

A marvelous performance of an unknown Late Baroque opera 28 April 2012
By J. Gabrielson - Published on Amazon.com

This is a wonderful recording of an opera by Graun, a little known German composer antedating Mozart. Rene Jacobs does a superb job of bringing together many wonderful singers and Concerto Koln does their usual masterful work. The libretto is in Italian and the music is melodic, lilting in parts, highly emotional and totally charming.
I can't recommend it enough. If you expect Handel, he is not here. This is more like a Vivaldi opera, of which many wonderful recordings have been made of that gentleman's oeuvre recently. The soprano and tenor are especially delightful>

A quality performance 9 May 1999
By gks5q@virginia.edu - Published on Amazon.com
I bought this out of curiosity. Well, it won't exactly compare to Handel, but it is a quality opera, and it is very well presented here. I can't say that this is one of my favorite CD's, but it deserves a high rating. My usual idiosyncratic objection (which is NOT a reflection on the artistic merit!) is this: male roles should be sung by males. The world is teeming with countertenors ready to stand in the shoes of the unfortunate castrati for whom these operas were written.
