Book Description

6 Aug 2011
Stanley Hobbes is a neat, quiet, verging on OCD obituary writer for the Edinburgh Times - who usually keeps himself to himself and hasn't had much to say after two years in the same boring job - when he unexpectedly lands a potentially huge story through a ridiculously strange obituary scenario and gets promoted to a 'proper journalist'. When he is sent to report on the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, he meets dangerous Russian dancer Marcella Dimitrieva and gets swept up in the strange and confusing world of the Fringe shows whilst inexplicably finding himself at the centre of a mystery. When the first murder takes place, Stanley feels he has to find some answers, but things just seem to get stranger and stranger. Haunted by his past and mourning the recent loss of his substantial tie collection, is Stanley completely out of his depth? And W.W.D.D - What would Data do?

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific read. 16 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
This is the first book from the relatively new author, Bronwen Winter Phoenix, that I've read. It will not be the last. She is a master at pacing a novel. One is able to read and enjoy passages of wit and charm and, when the need arises, speed through as the pace of the story increases. I was able to like and enjoy the lives and personalities of all the characters in the book. She was able to make me laugh, smile and worry about them too ... something that is tricky when one doesn't like the people so much. The coming together of unconnected events was handled with a precision that reminded me of Pulp Fiction - though I hasten to add that the plots themselves are quite unalike! The small chapters, and lovely quotes accompanying each one, help this book feel fast and easy to read: buy it, read it, love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book. 6 Oct 2011
By Jodie
Format:Paperback
This is a very good book from a very good author. A couple of bits in the book annoyed me, which is why I have given it four stars rather than five. That said, there were far more good parts than bad. This book has lots of twists but also a lot of POV changes. This is probably necessary for a book of this genre (a genre I've never read anything in before) and makes sense in the context of the book.

I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone looking for an exciting story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nici 10 Sep 2011
By Nici
Format:Paperback
From the first line of the 'Author Disclaimer' - I am a teller of tall tales - you knew that this was going to be a good book. As an avid reader of Bronwen's first two books, I could not wait to get started on GRASSMARKET BLOOD. Fast paced from the beginning, I was absorbed instantly into the secret world hidden in the streets of Edinburgh. A thriller full of sinister suspense with a touch of romance and quick wit, it kept me turning the pages. Likeable characters with their own quirky traits, made Grassmarket Blood very readable as well as gripping. Once again Bronwen has written an extremely brilliant, fantastic book, which didn't disappoint. Bronwen's stories just gets better and better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Witty, sometimes tense, but mostly good fun 7 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
Set in Edinburgh this story starts of on a nice pace and keeps rolling. Where the start of it is witty humour it turns toward a bit more sinister later on, without missing a beat in between. Both ways of story telling work out nicely, and it's fun to meet the characters. Also, having wandered the streets of Edinburgh myself it's almost possible to follow the story through the memory of the city - making one want to visit it again. Definitely a book worthy of recommendation, and clearly showing growth in the writing style of this young writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read. 5 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
Mystery, action, romance, and just the barest hint of the supernatural come together to form one of the best books I've read in a long time. The book is every bit a page turner as a Dan Brown novel, but without the pretension and muddled history.

Perfect for a Sunday afternoon read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Murder at the Fringe 6 May 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a cool whodunnit that has everything - lots of twists, atmosphere, an unlikely detective, and quirky characters. Set during the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, obituary writer Stanley finds himself involved in a murder case. During his investigation he encounters a pirate, goths, aristocrats, and beautiful but dangerous Russian acrobat Marcella Dimitrieva who has a thing for Data. This thriller is a lot of fun to read - it's got plenty of suspense and humour.
