"...there is a lot of wisdom here."The Times

Product Description

Everybody talks about an empowered workforce but no one has one. Managers constantly complain that their people are more empowered than they think they are. They’ve told them they’re empowered, so why don’t their people act like it?

Firstly, it's not enough to just tell people they are empowered - you have to show them. And secondly, because from the beginning empowerment has been driven by consultants. It’s been delivered by high-cost, low-impact, top-down initiatives.

Now people in business are waking up to the fact that you can’t deliver empowerment with hit and run consultants. If you want your people to be engaged in and continually improving the business, they’ve got to be doing it for themselves.

The answer is Grass Roots Management. Give people the plans, tools, time, money and permission, and watch them build your business.

Available as a book or in dramatised audio book form on CD and cassette.

By Mr. A. C. Gilbert VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This book uses a story-telling concept to state some simple but very valuable truths about what makes any Company succeed or fail - the people which it employs and which the managers manage.
I didn't particularly warm to the story itself, but the fundamental point - that it's all too easy to get lost in the impersonal, to focus on fads and figures, but that long-term what counts is how you help your people to grow into a team whose whole is larger and better than the sum of its parts - is clearly and succinctly made.
The book is a quick and easy read, and I particularly liked the summary points at the end of each chapter, many of which I have copied and stuck to the wall in front of me as a reminder to focus on what's really important.
This book would be an excellent framework for a management retreat or regular review, or as a spark during a forum discussion for a management team which is not getting the most out of people.
Well worth the relatively short reading time and the modest outlay.

As a practising management development specialist, I have to say that this is the best management book I have ever read, and that includes a very comprehensive library at the office. In order not to spoil the experience for other readers, I won't explain Guy's approach in detail, but the book offers practical advice in an effective way. It's a quick read in an easy style, with all the key points summarised at the end of each chapter. It should be compulsory reading for every Managing Director or CEO, together with their direct reports and anyone with an interest in people development.

I only came across the book by chance, having seen Guy Browning chair a number of conference sessions. The way in which he dealt with pompous, long-winded chief executives (with tact and humour to avoid bruising their egos) led me to search out other examples of his work. I'll be ordering other titles immediately.

This isn't so much a management book as a rant by the author of everything he hates about bad management. Throughout, I was thinking, yes - I know what bad management looks like, now tell me how to do it better! Unfortunately, the only advice on how to do it right was at the very end of the book, and even then it wasn't ground-breaking. If you want to know about management pitfalls to avoid, this book is for you. If you are after tips and advice on managing people effectively, I would choose another book.
