Sophisticated entertainment but a lousy DVD transfer,
By Mad about Movies (England, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Grass Is Greener [DVD] (DVD)
I adore the cast of this film, all of them genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves during the filming of it. Jean Simmons in particular was a delight, playing a London based society girl. Her character brings out the best in her, as a comedienne, and it's a wonderfully amusing and effervescent performance.
The DVD though is a disappointment. It's presented in it's correct aspect ratio, but is not 16.9 enhanced, which therefore doesn't bring out the best quality ... in short, the transfer is awfully soft, especially in the long shots. Universal have proved before that they can do better than this, so I hope we see a better DVD print of this film, someday.

After watching the film on TV and owning the video, I was disappointed at the sound quality of this DVD. Cary Grant simply does not sound like Cary Grant, but a very bad actor voice over. Being a great fan of Cary Grant I could not watch this movie more than 15 minutes because of the sound. Thankfully I have retained the VHS.

The Grass Is Greener,
This review is from: The Grass Is Greener [1960] [DVD] (DVD)
Though this movie doesn't seem to have good criticism by the critics, I love this. The reasons are as follows.
1. 5 main actors and actresses are wonderful and delightful to watch. (4 stars and Morley Watson ----They are almost the only players in this movie.) Especially, Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. According to several books, their original casting was "Charls Delacro" and "Hattie Durant" which Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons played, and Lex Harrison and Kay Kendall were originally intended for the leading roles, but the death of Kay Kendall had changed all. I think the original casting might have been intresting too. Cary Grant plays an English Lord husband who is trying to take his wife(Deborah Kerr)back by an unusual way from an American oil-millionaire(Robert Mitchum) who fell in love with her and stole her heart. In this uniqe role, Cary shows maturity as well as his comedian talent, sophistication. Deborah kerr also shows her comedienne talent. I truly appreciate her various performance ability. I think her atractiveness is elegant sex appeal oozed out of graceful, proper performance no matter what a role is. In this movie, Cary and Deborah's long talk scene after a duel is very charming and their chemistry is superb. 2.Full of witty daialogues and Stanley Donen's smart direction I enjoyed the dialogues full of humor and wit which are associated with Oscar Wilde,Noel Coward, and William Somerset Maugham. Also I enjoyed several cleverly directed scenes such as the shynchronized telephone scene in split screen, the metaphorical dating scenes of Deborah Kerr and Robert Mitchum , which cotinue picnic scene, boat scene, dance hall scene, concert scene, restaurant scene, hotel's drawing room to bedroom's closing door scene, all scenes without showing the two. 3.Music composed by Noel Coward Romantic, lyrical melody. Especially, the music for Deborah Kerr and Robert MItchum scene, also the music for Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant scene, they are so delicious. My requests to this DVD (1)to subtitle in English (2)to add special feature something like "making film"
