Book Description

24 April 2008
In this revised and updated edition of Grasp the Nettle Peter Proctor tells the reader how to apply biodynamic methods of farming and gardening to a wide range of conditions in New Zealand and in other countries. The book provides practical observations and techniques, and relates these to the spiritual scientific knowlege that biodynamic practice is based on. Peter gives tips on how to recognise healthy soil and pasture, and on how to make your own biodynamic preparations. He also gives examples of farms that are successfully using biodynamic methods. This book aims to assist biodynamic farmers and gardeners to observe the processes of life and growth, and to understand how these processes are governed by cosmic forces, so they can use this knowlege in applying their practical skills. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Peter Proctor, past national field advisor for the NZ Bio Dynamic Farming and Gardening Association, now teaches and advises farmers on biodynamic methods around the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Muck and magic? 11 Nov 2003
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I thought it was all muck and magic at first, being a sceptical sort of person but as i do agriculture as a degree, alot of the book talks about sustainable methods and making preparations etc. Its a great book, worth the money, even if at the end you dont believe the content, its worth it just to know what some nutter in europe is doing!

5.0 out of 5 stars to quote the quote "Matter is never without Spirit, and Spirit never without Matter' 17 April 2009
By Vivek Jayan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Although I haven't met Peter as yet, I have been an avid follower of Peter's work on the upheaval of holistic farming for the benefit or rural/urban India. to the extent I have known him through the various indirect sources I have been in touch with, he is putting dedicated efforts towards conveying a strong message ,a message against the ageing of earth with toxic chemicals, a message for the upgradation of human health/animal health and a better environment by practices such as maintaining truly fertile soil by incorporating plenty of organic matter and biodynamic preparation. These biodynamic preparations and information on best practices have been detailed through this book and the book also encourages us to observe and think about the forms and patterns in nature.
I was quite fascinated with the knowledge about the spiral or the vortex being the fundamental to plant life and its comparison to the practices used for biodynamic preparations.

I strongly recommend the book to any enthusiastic new comers to the field of holistic farming or to the veterans who still believe in the conventional chemical farming approach as a first read, which will clarify many doubts ,but Yes , as Peter rightly quote's in this book 'Many's the doubt that needs to be answered
of this direction to be mastered
But this courage now to change the way'
let Grasp the Nettle pave the wayOne Man, One Cow, One Planet
