Product Description

Product Description

Where America leads, the rest of the world follows. Over the decades its cities have lured adventurous souls from around the world with the irresistible promise of the American Dream. Its histories have been built, knocked down and rebuilt bigger and better. This is the NewWorld. And who better to take you around the NewWorld than its artists? Following on from Graphic Europe, Graphic USA is an alternative guide to 25 cities, written and illustrated by designers living in those cities. Following a user-friendly format, the book lists places to stay, bars, restaurants, galleries and clubs with a distinctly alternative edge. From Austin to Boston and Miami to Memphis its the book that will tell you where to find blue collar dive bars with wood panelling serving up tumblers of local whiskey. It picks out the uber-slick hotels designed by the hippest architects, and the weird restaurant in the strip mall that serves the best breakfast burrito this side of the border. Accompanying these nuggets of insider knowledge are brilliantly vivid illustrations that reflect the designers experiences of their city. A beautiful object, a useful guide, it offers a truly unique insight into the heart of American culture.

An alternative guidebook is a bit of a contradiction in terms. People interested in the alternative scene are likely to be able to sniff out places of interest without the help of a book, and the scene itself is likely to be so amorphous and ever-changing that any attempt to nail it down in print must be doomed to failure.

Despite this, Graphic USA is an attractive and interesting book in its own right. 25 graphic designers describe their favourite cities in words and images, including such less-trumpeted places as Milwaukee, Anchorage and Kansas City as well as New York and Chicago. It's not likely to be much use to first-time visitors to the states - there isn't much in the way of maps or photos - but will delight anyone who has been to the country a few times and wants to compare notes or is in need of a little inspiration.

I often find myself waking up in strange cities wondering what to do to pass a long evening or where to go for a decent cup of coffee. Graphic USA is a fantastic book for short breaks in US cities. Having lived a long time in LA, I can testify that the recommendations are genuinely off the beaten track, but not too alienating in their cool-ness. It's also a beautiful book - the wealth of images is pretty phenomenal - each artist has their own style and it has been carefully curated to create a rich tapestry of illustration, photography and collage. Memphis and New Orleans particularly ignited my desire to explore.

I bought Graphic Europe - the first book in this series - about two years ago, and it's a well-thumbed companion that has served me well. I look forward to this one doing the same.

my fantasy road trip in a book 29 Mar 2011
By B. C. Elsley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
My girlfriend bought me this book last week and it is totally awesome. First of all it looks great. You can't see on the cover image, but it's got a fabric on the spine, and it has a very satisfying substance to it - nice size and weight. The paper is really nice too, with a rough, sketchbook-like feel. Each chapter is written and illustrated by an artist-designer, and the images are really varied - there's photography, drawing, and collage. Some chapters are stronger than others but the overall look and feel of the book is very high end and visually engaging. Next up - the text. Also really great. I come from LA, and the listings for that city are spot on. Alternative venues, but not too art-studenty - more like upmarket alternative venues. Of course each text is written by a single author, so reading through the other cities, you get a sense that some of the writers are more on your wavelength than others, but there's not a single city in this book that I don't now want to visit. Memphis looks amazing. So does Charleston. Each city is about 10 pages long - so probably not enough if you're visiting for more than a week, but plenty to keep you going for a city break. I've been keeping this in my bathroom at home. It's a great book to browse and dream of road trips.

Bought this for my son and within an hour he was texting a friend in St. Louis about some of the things she should check out in her city. The concept of the book is a good one, and the design makes it appealing, particularly to an advertising major.
Great way to get familiar with a new city 26 Jan 2012

I don't normally write Amazon reviews, but I'm really impressed with this item and thought I'd throw my hat in the ring. First of all, this book is visually interesting, but not in a typical guidebook way - it's all art by the artist who designed that chapter. The work for each city is completely different from the other, and they are all great. As far as content, this guide provides a great overview of fun spots in a city that aren't McDonalds (or some other thing that's equally ubiquitous) which is GREAT. I've lived in both St. Louis and now D.C. and have found these sources to be spot on. As a law student in DC, I don't have much time to scope out places that will make me feel like a local (yes, I see the irony in trying to find a place to be a local when the only place I'm a "local" of is the law library). I think the best use I've gotten out of this book, then, is how to find places when you move somewhere new and have literally no idea of what is good in your city, and you're overwhelmed by the sheer mass of reviews on yelp. But even if you aren't moving to one of these cool cities, this book is great for planning trips and honestly, just to sit there and look at.
