You'll never know what's in a sketchbook. That's one of the surprises for opening them.

In this thick 352-page paperback, 110 artists and designers are featured. A lot of graphic designers are unfamiliar to me but I do spot a few illustrators like Gary Baseman, James Jean (he seems to be in a lot of sketchbook collections), infographics maestro Nigel Holmes, John Cuneo.

The illustrative style is incredibly varied and the drawing subjects random. The work featured range from scrappy sketches to photographic collages. Each is a snapshot of the artist's mind. However the sketches are nothing like the commercial work the artists do, with the exception of a few. Compared to other sketchbook collections, this book is less illustrative in the sense that the drawings are more doodle-like.

The commentary is concise, sure, but could have been longer for more reading pleasure. The websites of all the artists are included at the back of the book.

If you're not into any specific subjects and like doodles, you might like this book.

There are two publishers for this book namely The Monacelli Press and Thames & Hudson. The editions are priced differently, but should contain the same content. On Amazon UK, Thames & Hudson's edition is much cheaper.

Few people get to see inside the sketchbooks of designers and illustrators. We normally only see the final product on the pages of our books and magazines. This book features reproductions of pages from the private sketchbooks of over 100 top illustrators and graphic designers from around the world.

These designers use their sketchbooks for recording their ideas, dreams, and the world around them. They serve as a laboratory for developing projects before they reach their final finished state; and as such they give a glimpse into the creative process of these talented individuals.

Included in this anthology are designs from ad campaigns, book illustrations, cartoons, and travel journals. The styles illustrated in this book are as varied as the artists. There are doodled letters, cartoon drawings, photos, and sketches of all kinds.
The illustrations are accompanied by concise and informative texts detailing the artists' creative development, their design philosophies, techniques, and visual influences.

Websites for all the designers are given at the end of the book, so you can explore their worlds' further.
This is a great source of design inspiration for anyone working in graphics, illustration, or if you are just interested in design.

I've been looking for something like this as a resource to show students for years. Seymour Chwast, Marian Bantjes, Ed Fella and many others give us a glimpse into the preparatory ideas, doodles, notes and experiments which sometimes precede more finished pieces,
other times are stand alone ideas. A complete treasure chest and a snip at £13!

I'm not a designer but sometimes I see a book which looks so interesting that I just want to look at it over and over again. Graphic is one such book.

With hundreds of images taken from dozens of the World's best designers, this book provides an insight into the inner workings of the designers, the materials they like to use and the manner in which they capture and store their ideas.

I purchased this book just for the joy of looking at it and I've yet to be disappointed.

A lot of HE students (as well as A lvl) have problem with grasping the idea of 'What sketchbook (or Studio Journal) should look like?' and what is may contain. Visual-wise, this book is contains excellent examples of sketchbook that can give and idea and inspire any art student (Graphic Design, Illustrators etc.) at any level.

And a £[] is a bargain in itself as well. Would recommend.

I would really recommend this book, as the variety within it is huge unlike a lot of things out there, that seem to stick with one type of design style. It not only contains more polished pieces, but also has extremely rough sketches which I think makes a nice change to the "perfection" often shown in this style of book.
The pages are filled to the brim with images meaning this is not just a one look wonder. There is also a small portion of text about each designer/illustrator which basically talks about their relationships with their sketchbooks, this can get a little similar at times but on the whole does not take away from the overall visual focus of the book.

If you're into illustration, art and sketching, then this book will be right up your street. If you like thumbing through something different, then, again, this would be a good book for you. At 350 pages and at a size a little over A4, this is one hefty tome.

In this book, approximately 100 (I haven't bothered to count them all) of the worlds leading graphic designers showcase some of the pages of their sketchbooks. Each contribution is prefaced with a paragraph or two of text outlining their philosophy to sketching. You'll get to see why they sketch, but that's about it - don't expect much more. The actual images are beautifully reproduced and cover all manner of illustrations and art. Again, way too many to even try to summarize in this review, but to give you snapshot: typography, website wireframes, scribbles, collages, photos.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the same as that given by another reviewer - this book is heavily biased towards fine art and illustration. There's isn't much in the way of graphic design. Needless to say, it still makes for an excellent reference book and one that will provide a lifetime of inspiration. I also recently purchased An Illustrated Life: Drawing Inspiration from the Private Sketchbooks of Artists, Illustrators and Designers, which provides more balanced content and examples. But if you get them both then you're pretty much set.
