Britain's Neville Brody is one of the most recognized designers of his generation, known internationally for pushing the boundaries of graphic design. Early in his career he asked, "Why can't you have a painterly approach within the printed medium?" This poster for a graphic arts seminar in Japan demonstrates Brody's digital painting. Brody's work explored emerging software capabilities (Photoshop 1.0 was released in 1990) while testing the limits of legibility and traditional typography. Initially, some critics questioned the commercial prospects of this approach. They were quickly proven wrong. See more of his influential work in
the Typography chapter.

Throughout the book you'll notice several historic posters that have helped shape graphic design over the past 100 years. These "hero" designers expressed their passion for type, image, color, and layout in their works. It is my hope they will inspire you as you develop your skills in design.
Look around and you'll see that graphic design is everywhere. It's the most pervasive art form in our society. And when it's good, it's powerful. Graphic design influences our purchases with clever packaging, persuasive advertising, and distinctive branding. It also engages us and enhances our comprehension of text in magazines and books, and on websites and cell-phone displays.
Would you like to produce powerful work such as this? This book will teach you how to analyze designs to understand their underlying strategies. It will provide guidelines for successfully choosing and using typefaces, images, and layouts. And it will teach you software skills with design exercises so that you can create your own influential graphic designs in all forms, from print to new media.

One of my most useful buys as a beginner in graphic design and new to the Adobe Creative Suite. This book has been great for me. Clear overview of key concepts and ideas with loads of pictures of exampes. Helps a novice unpick what they are looking at an recognise all the decisions a designer has made.
Don't be put off by the plain cover - the inside couldn't be more different! Well produced and visually engaging.
The exercises to introduce you to Adobe tools are useful. Be warned the instructions are brief and if you are learning in isolation (as I am - filling time while stuck overseas) you may want to buy other books to help you. But between these exercises and online tutorials you can made some headway with Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator.
While I have used the software exercises, I have been less disciplined about doing the design practicals as I have other distance learning assignments - but I think that has been to my own detriment and I intend to go back and work through them porperly.
Suspect it's going to remain a useful reference for a long time to come.

If you're just starting out in graphic design and you want to teach yourself, this is a good book to start with.
It has the basic step by step on how to use the Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign, and has some assignments and projects to help you develop. It talks about the elements of design, typography, images, layout, logo design & visual themes, it's simple to understand and straight to the point. If you don't have Adobe, try downloading the 30 day trial. It's free.

A link has been provided in the book to download the files for the assignments, but that link does not work.

After Googling, I found a link with the files, use this link down below to access them:

Buy a used book. As a beginner it's not necessary to buy a brand new book, eventually you'll be a pro at it, I got a perfectly used book in great condition for £4.99, it does the same job as a book that costs twice as much. Regardless what version of Adobe you're using, this book

Great text for beginning graphic design students 10 Jun 2009
By Julia M. Baldwin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I chose a different text for the intro level computer graphics class I am teaching. I picked up this one as well but did not require my students to purchase it. I am finding that this would have been a better choice. The illustrations/screenshots are huge and easy to understand. The step by step instructions for learning software skills are superb, and the explanations of fundamental design concepts are strong. The choices Macario makes for real-world design examples are much better than in other books I've seen. I also enjoy her candid sense of humor. This will be a great text for one of my future intro classes. It would also be a good book for someone who is learning the skills on their own.

This is great if you're a beginner and barely know anything at all about design. Unless you're brand new to Adobe CS, the exercises are a little too easy, but the content about color, layout, etc. is very appropriate and helpful for a beginner.
