More About the Author

Simon Downs is Lecturer in Graphic Communication at Loughborough University, UK.
Simon initially trained as a painter / illustrator, and was privileged to be taught by the lovely Sam Marshall. He worked across a range of design disciplines from the late 80's to the present day including animation, interaction design, illustration, editorial, prop design, and many other weird things that make visual meaning.
He first encountered 'Interaction' in 1993 while working as a multimedia designer in London. The combination of user interaction and visual aesthetics has been fascinating and frustrating him since. Working as a web designer convinced him that there must be a better way of communicating the visual digitally.
He has taught at DeMontfort and Loughborough Universities, before becoming a full-time researcher and lecturer at Loughborough in 2003.
He is married to the textile designer and researcher Claire Lerpiniere. They have three children who are generally considered to be one inappropriate laugh away from being evil geniuses.
His hobbies are restricted to design, making computers do fun stuff with strange operating systems and politics.
He is also:
* The Managing Editor of The Poster - The Journal of Visual Rhetoric in the Public Sphere
* Co-Editor of Tracey - The Journal of Contemporary Drawing
* A Director of the Drawing Research Network
* The author of The Graphic Communication Handbook
* One of the authors of Drawing Now: Between the Lines of Contemporary Art (2007)
* An Associate Editor of the Journal of Technology, Knowledge and Society.
* A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
* A Member of the Design Research Society's Special Interest Group on Design Pedagogy
* The University and Colleges Union representative for the Loughborough University School of Art (what is the point of all this communication, if we don't use it to change the world?)

He likes Islay malt whiskey and Korea.
