Since 2009 almost all diesels will have had a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) fitted to enable up to an 80% reduction in soot emmisions. A DPF is basically a trap that catches soot particles in the exhaust system. The soot is then burnt off in the exhaust, called regeneration. On long journeys this happens automatically because the exhaust will reach high temperatures. On short journeys however the ECU will need to make adjustments to the engine to help the exhaust reach a high enough temperature to burn off the soot deposits. Due to stop start driving in towns this isn't always possible and this is where problems can occur. If the regeneration does not complete, the DPF warning light may light up to show that the Diesel Particulate Filter is partly blocked. If this happens you may be able to burn off the soot by driving faster (within the speed limits) for a period of 10 minutes or more.
