OK, I was a big Woodentops fan in the late 80s/90s. However, that was years ago. So I'm going to write this review as a 2014 release by any other band; and try to forget the legacy and in some ways, the expectation.

First impression of the single was mixed as I was having to listen to it on YouTube and through the usual rubbish laptop or smartphone speakers. So then the album turned up on Monday. I don't want to even think how many years it's been since a full Woodentops release.

So you've already noticed the 4-star review, right? It's a very good album and by any other standards it's great. I've only given it about 3 listens so far and I'm sure it'll grow further but from the initial listen I enjoyed it. I don't think I can ask for more than that. It could so easily have been a disappointment that would've only tainted the past albums by association. Instead this is a fine body of work that compliments the earlier material nicely. It's classic Woodentops but it's 2014 too.

It's great to have you guys back and I'll see you on March 8th at the London gig!

Footnote: I've just been listening again to the album and it's very much 4 and a half stars! There's some really good production on this album. Often, when a band have been away this long and return to make an album it's done on such a shoestring budget that you can hear it through the poor production or limited band members or use of cheaper technology to fill out the sound. Not the case with Granular Tales. It's very well recorded and produced and the expanse of sound creates a quality vibe too.

Would recommend this! Brings the Woodentops bang up to 2014 - Worth a listen if you're a fan from their earlier days!

Briiliant new album by the woodentops - their first since "Wooden Footcops On The Highway" back in the mid 80s
