Review

'Ford's introduction is as complete and persuasive an introduction to post-war American writing as one could hope for' "The Times" 'An indispensable volume ... a colossal book that contains not only classics by the greats but also perfect stories by lesser known writers' Philip Hensher, "Mail on Sunday" 'Ford's choice of stories is exemplary ... there's wonderful reading here' "Washington Post" 'This is a rich collection' "Guardian" 'A carefully wrought compilation that does credit to its rich subject' "Literary Review" 'Ford treats us to some stunning stories' "Nation"

Product Description

Richard Ford, who is among the finest of American novelists and short story writers, edits and introduces this volume. First published by Granta in 1992, it became the definitive anthology of American short fiction written in the last half of the twentieth century - an 'exemplary choice' in the words of the "Washington Post" - with stories by writers such as Eudora Welty, John Cheever, and Raymond Carver (and forty others) demonstrating how much memorable power can lie in the briefest narration. Along with "The Granta Book of the American Short Story: Volume 2", this book constitutes an important reflection and judgment of recent American writing - as well as the superb pleasure yielded by the stories themselves.

This was recommended to me by my lecturer. I thought it would be dry and dusty as it's well out of my normal preferred reading. Instead it was as good as he told us. I especially likes Blackberry Winter. Well worth it.The Granta Book of the American Short Story: v. 1

For the short story zealot this book is a must with a good cross section of established and new proponents of the art of short story writing. Forty short stories. Great value.

American Short Stories 29 April 2009
Format:Paperback
This was selected by our teacher for the 6-week extension course of the W.E.A. literature class I attend. Twelve of the stories were selected for their authors' variety of approach - they are certainly causing some animated discussions! I have not yet read any of the other stories - the course is still in progress and I need to stay focussed. Those reading from this anthology should expect to be entertained, challenged, shocked, puzzled and amused, judging by the stories we have read. They certainly demonstrate the spectrum of both male and female American short-story writing styles.
