What I loved most about this book is its holistic approach to understanding the world and lifestyle that Grant Wood was a part of. It's more than just descriptions of art, but an entire cultural immersion. Elliot and Balthazar Rose carry you on an epic adventure through one of America's most beloved (yet underappreciated) states, and help you discover what is so special about Iowa with an emphasis on Wood's iconic art of the Midwest.

I highly recommend this book to anyone going on a road trip through Iowa, or who has an interest in American art!

fun little plug for Wood and IA, too 11 Jun 2013
By Michigan Reviewer - Published on
Format: Paperback
This is a fun little plug for the state of IA and also for Grant Wood, may he rest in peace. Truth be told, I really did not know all that much about Mr. Wood, except for, of course, American Gothic. My brother lived in Cedar Rapids, where Wood spent a good deal of time, for a while. My brother had a very nice little stone home. The fireplace, purportedly, was designed by Grant Wood. Who knows. According to the author Wood lived in the carriage house of a funeral home for a number of years. The book explores many of Wood's paintings in the context of time and location. Understanding Wood's life circumstances and experiences helps explain the direction he took with his art. I did not know exactly when Mr. Wood lived. It turns out he was even employed by FDR to document some of the experiences of farmers during the Not So Great Depression. Wood, like the author, never forgot his IA roots. Fun little book for those who like IA and for those who want to learn more about Mr. Wood. The author includes lots of little trips, activities, etc to make the journey even more enjoyable.
