Product Description

An axe is only as good as the Smith... And Gransfors back this up by stamping each individual hand forged axe with the makers initials, and offer a 20 year guarantee against defective workmanship... can you name another axe producer that offers this? Gransfors Axes are really at the cutting edge of Axe production, and the Small Forest Axe is crammed full of features. Large enough to fell small trees and chop kindling and fuel, yet small enough to fit into a rucksack for travel. Handy both in the field and in the back yard, these axes are not only beautiful to look at, they are beautiful to use. Features include a grain-leather safety sheath for transportation and storage, a traditional Poll, with a face of 3 1/4" and 19" hickory handle. This handle has been treated with hot linseed oil and covered in bees wax to help keep the dirt off. Also take a look at the grain of the handle, the hickory has been selected to provide the optimum strength. The axe head has been secured in place on the handle using traditional techniques of a wedge and staple. So what do our instructors think? Here Jason from Woodland Ways Bushcraft and Survival writes: "I have been using Gransfors Axes for 8 years now, but they have been producing them for 106 years... and the experience shows. I like the fine balance of these axes making precision work easier, and the ergonomically designed handle allows for prolonged periods of use, if you want to invest in a good axe, consider what you want to use it for, and then buy the appropriate Gransfors Axe!" Advantages: The sheath allows for safe transportation and storage, they are small enough to carry with you out in the field yet still large enough to cope with demanding jobs. The balance of the axe is fantastic, just pop your finger between the axe head and the handle and you'll see. Comes complete with a Gransfors Axe Book. Disadvantages: OK we accept that these axes are not the cheapest option out there... but they are the best!

Delighted 23 Nov 2010
This axe is a legend in survival circles. I have never owned one but was delighted to receive it as a gift. I use an axe a lot mainly for chopping wood and other tasks including fencing carving and preparing game. I already have my favourite for heavy work the Fiskars axe but the Granfors takes some beating.
It will fell small trees and prep wood for the fire, although at 19/20" long it is not a felling axe. It is reasonably light and well balanced and I have found it easy to handle safely and with accuracy. It arrived very very sharp indeed and was put to work next day as an axe and hammer and handled the work with ease. It does everything I ask of it and I take it everywhere with me( No not to the pub or shopping on Saturday ). I still prefer the Fiskars for splitting wood but the granfors is a truely all purpose tool. It comes with a basic but good quality sheath which secures the blade. This is important as it is very sharp, indeed I have well cared for knives that don,t have such an edge. I use a stone and strop to sharpen, the booklet with the axe will tell you how. Make sure you protect the head against rust, keep it sharp and it shouldn,t let you down.
Incidently, my axe did not come from Amazon and was cheaper else where.

This is a very nice well made axe that will last you a life time if you look after it. The build quality is out standing,If you are looking for a top quality axe look no further.
worth giving it 2 or 3 coats of Boiled Linseed Oil when you get it, then coat it once a year and it will last for years.

The attentional to detail on these axes is wonderful, hand crafted workmanship of the highest quality.

Delivery was quick, axe is in top condition, sheath is excellent and comes with a great booklet full of info about wood cutting etc. Splitting wood in general, yeh it can do it, though it would make more sense going for the Gransfors Bruks large/small splitting axe if your splitting big rounds. If you go out camping on the reg this is perfect. Top marks from me.
