Review

"Grania explodes from the pages of Ms. Llywelyn's best historical novel yet as one of the most remarkable women who ever lived--brave, resourceful, passionate, tender, and, finally, in her battle with the English she-king Elizabeth, victorious. A book for all those who are Irish, or who would like to be, or who like to read about the Irish." --Andrew M. Greeley
"Mary Stewart has a worthy rival." "-The Baltimore Sun" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

Here is an extraordinary novel about real-life Irish chieftain Grace O Malley. From Morgan Llywelyn, bestselling author of Lion of Ireland and the Irish Century novels, comes the story of a magnificent, sixteenth-century heroine whose spirit and passion are the spirit and passion of Ireland itself.
Grania (Gaelic for Grace) is no ordinary female. And she lives in extraordinary times. For even as Grania rises as her clan's unofficial head and breadwinner and learns to love a man, she enters a lifelong struggle against the English forces of Queen Elizabeth -- her nemesis and alter ego.
Elizabeth intends to destroy Grania's piracy and shipping empire--and so subjugate Ireland once and for all. But Grania, aided by Tigernan, her faithful (and secretly adoring) lieutenant, has no choice but to fight back. The story of her life is the story of Ireland's fight for solidarity and survival--but it's also the story of Grania's growing ability to love and be strong at the same time.
Morgan Llywelyn has written a rich, historically accurate, and passionate novel of divided Ireland -- and of one brave woman who is Ireland herself.

An epic tale... 15 May 2009
By K. Doig
Format:Paperback
I loved the Finn MacCool book also written by Morgan Llewellyn so turned to this book to discover more about another famous Irish hero and was slightly disappointed. I found it took a long time to get going.

There was a lot of background to take in in the first half of the book and not nearly enough action. The opening scene is very dramatic but I found that after that it went down a gear and took a long time to get going again. It is very well written though and I love the drama of it all. It makes the book very visual and it makes Grania seem very real as well as her men and her country.

With all the fuss in recent times of Elizabeth and Henry VIII it really was great to hear the Irish perspective and put the British/Irish history into context. You hope if they ever make a film of it that they do it justice. I loved the theme throughout hte book of Grania firstly hating Elizabeth then coming to respect her whilst still managing to retain her own dignity and glory.

An inspiring read if at first a little disappointing but proves that it isn't only Johnny Depp that came make pirates exciting once again.

Format:Hardcover
Once again, Morgan Llywelyn resurrects a character from history. This time it's Grania O'Malley, who defied the conventions of Elizabethan Ireland to create a life as a sailor, tradeswoman, and pirate. There are times when you can almost smell the sea. Grania is an extraordinary woman who lived in extraordinary times, but Morgan Llywelyn is well worthy of telling her tale.

IRISH HISTORY OF OLD 27 July 2011
Format:Hardcover
The author has a free natural style which makes this book easy to read. Few books have been seen in Australia which deal with the early history of Ireland. Very lacking in this book is a time scale. The century in which Grania lived is not mentioned until the reader gets well into the story. On reading this historic story of these true events during the reign of Elizabeth of England, (Henry V111 daughter)we realize that the English have a great deal to answer for. Their successful attempts to take control of Ireland and Anglicise it, was both cunning, outrageous, and brutish. I suspect that the Irish at that time, although primitive and fiercely tribal; they had no desire to try to conquer England. (I may be wrong about that)
A few photographs should be included in this book showing the nature of the Stone Castles where the tribal leaders lived and fought with each other for both survival and power. (The age old story) The absence of dates (years) in which several of the significant events took place makes this story very frustrating for the reader. Grania was indeed a legend in her time.
Grania or Granuaile or Grace as she was known, would have given Margaret Thatcher a hard time if she was alive!

Another book by another author, titled GRUAILE- THE LIFE & TIMES OF GRACE O'MALLEY is worth reading. This book is written more as an accurately historic work and contains numerous old drawings and photographs. and mentions the dates of significant events in Grace O'Malley's life. This book is considered the best record of the history of the era and is available through Amazon Books.
