This book tells the tale of a determined and undaunted lady who will do her utmost best to get back her husband, by hook or by crook, no matter what it takes her. She travels, disguises herself, plays a trick, scolds her husband roundly, does - in short - antything a normal, full-blooded woman would do in her place. the important thing to note though, is that this is the India of yore, and what this gutsy lady achieves is nothing short of a wonder, considering the state of society and the narrow way of thinking characteristic of the times she lived in. Narayan takes us back to those times and makes us get a ataste of what it involved to be a normal, energetic woman then, and that is no mean task, indeed. A very pleasant read, a peek through the magic-lantern into how we were once.
