Not her best! 16 Aug 2003
Format:Paperback
Carol Smith has always fascinated me, and I've read all her books, but Grandmother's Footsteps was such a disappointment. The author claims that people couldn't guess who the murderer was, but it was absolutely no problem to me, despite a very obvious red herring. It seemed to have no depth, this book, and the story although appropriately gruesome in parts, didn't flow. The structure was such that pieces of totally unnecessary detail were concentrated upon, and then the ending just sped up and finished.
She will have to do better than this to maintain her good name in fiction writing......

I picked up this book from my mother's bookshelf as a quick read. I have never read such complete and utter nonsense. The bare bones of the plot barely stand up to reason.

The characters are in no way plausible. Their personalities change to suit the current situation. There was clearly no research into Internet companies and the real business world; if you know nothing of it, don't write about it!

In the autor's own information, she states how she trys to keep the reader guessing the identity of the killer right to the end. I guessed, but only on the basis that given everything else in the book it had to be who it was - without giving the "game" away.

The amount of repetition was incredible, and combined with the numerous and obvious inconsistencies, it became irritating to read. Unfortunately I can never leave a book unfinished so laboured on to the dull, predictable, bitter end. If there was an option for zero stars, this would have got it.

I finished the book thinking that Carol Smith must have some influential contacts in the publishing world who owed her a favour.

I found this to be a lightweight book in every sense, not many words per page, and a lightweight plot as well. The author does not really establish a credible link between the cartographer and his mapping skills and the pattern of the murders. There also are a lot of domestic details which seems to be there to pad it out. Do we really need to know the menu every day? This is in contrast to the main characters wife who runs a dotcom company, about which we are told very little, not enough to make this credible either. I would not buy another Carol Smith book, havingread this one.
