In this book Ray Keene selects and annotates his most interesting games against such giants as Anatoly Karpov, Mikhail Botvinik, Mikhail Tal, Jan Timman, John Nunn, Tony Miles and Svetozar Gligoric. There is also a provocative essay on the superiority of mind sports over physical ones that is sure to arouse controversy amongst readers and reviewers alike. Originally published as a private limited edition, this book is now made available to the general public.
Raymond Keene is a British Chess Champion, and the first British Player to achieve a FIDE (World Chess Federation) Grandmaster norm. He was awarded the OBE for services to chess in 1985. Great book for chess enthusiasts, 26 Sep 2006
This review is from: Grandmaster Strategy (Hardinge Simpole Chess Classics) (Paperback)
This book celebrates the chess career of Grandmaster Raymond Keene, from the junior championships in which he developed his masterly skills to the worldwide Olympiads where he repeatedly proved himself as deserving of a grandmaster title. The games are accompanied with witty prefaces, my favourite being the one affixed to a game between himself and Botvinnik in 67: 'I appeared for this game wearing a dinner-jacket and black- elasticated bow tie, determined to perish in style. Photographs taken during the game later revealed that after Botvinnik's 26th move the elastic snapped, leaving my bow-tie dangling at an absurd angle, a fact of which I was oblivious during the game'. Despite such an unfortunate development Keene nevertheless succeeded in winning the battle, with Botvinnik abdicating in despair: 'He gasped, raised his hand to his forehead, and resigned.' One would assume that such a dramatic ending was generated by Keene's ruthless tactics and not the devastation of his attire.
The book also includes a thought provoking essay on the key importance of Mind Sports in our currently exercise-obsessed society. Not only our legs need stretching - our brains do too.
A great read all round!
