An immense, essential, authoritative compilation of hip-hop's founders, that spans two CDs with the genre's founding tracks. It starts off with the most important: the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight", a reconstruction of Chic's "Good Times" that is widely credited as the first commercially available hip-hop track (previously, the music had been confined to bootleg tapes and wild New York parties). The Sugarhill Gang, as explained by this album's excellent sleeve notes, were an artificial creation, kind of like a hip Monkees, used to exploit the potential of the leading label, Sugar Hill Records. As a result, none of the rest of their CD meets the same heights. Grandmaster Flash's Furious Five joined the Sugar Hill label, and released a stream of classics: "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on The Wheels of Steel" (the track that samples Blondie and Chic), "The Message" and "White Lines (Don't Do It)". --Charlie Porter
