Product Description

Fourteen-year old Madeline, whose family has recently been stationed in Germany, sets out to find out a family secret that no one wants to talk about, one that involves an unusual symbol and a photo of a mysterious young man…the same photo that brings her grandma to tears. Accompanied by her friend Molly, the girls use the Internet, journals, and clues found along the way to solve Grandma’s secret. Madeline realizes that she might not like the answer she finds, but is determined to discover the identity of the man and his connection to Grandma. As their adventure unfolds, Madeline learns the history of her grandmother's village, the horrible consequences of the Holocaust, and how World War II changed her family forever.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor Proofreading 20 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a good story. However it was difficult to read as there were many missing words.
The author has been let down by poor proofreading.
Some emphasis was misplaced or exaggerated, as it did not add to the story and I felt was not needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Reminder of Family Bonds 31 Jan 2013
By Cheri - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is sweet story of a young girl and the love she has for her grandmother. Written in the form of a mystery, it takes you to Germany where you are given a historical look at what family life was then and shows that not much has changed in the bonds that family has to sustain. What a treat to find that Madeline has kept the lessons Gramdma taught her even when it went against what she wanted to do. It also includes a brief glimpse into family life in the military.

4.0 out of 5 stars Poignant WWII teen research memoir, refreshingly modern 4 Jan 2014
By H. Schoenrock - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a person who reads a lot of Holocaust books, this one was certainly new for me. Can't believe I read a teen book, but glad I did. The maturity of the author is inspiring, and her immaturity understandable. I related to her voice, one of adventure and attachment to her grandma. The decision to reveal truth is important, and I am glad she did through this book, while sparing her grandma pain at the party. Kudos on getting Pieter name honored and justified. Bittersweet story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Story! 24 Jan 2013

This was a wonderful story! There was mystery, there was an interesting twist, and best of all there was a happy ending! This is the kind of story I could read for my own enjoyment, give to one of my nieces or nephews to read or read to my son as a bed time story. Wondeful, wonderful! I can't wait to read his next book!! Great job Parrish Worrell!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read 22 Nov 2013
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Really enjoyed this read - Madeline is portrayed as a normal girl faced with some significant changes. A move to Germany and a secret that her Grandma is keeping about the family's past all comes out in the most enjoyable story with some twists and surprises.

An interesting account of a girl solving a bit of a family mystery involving Germans during WWII. Appropriate for children about eight years and older.
