Book Description

8 Nov 2012

Gaming: it’s the greatest British invasion of them all. Lara Croft is an international icon and the British-born Grand Theft Auto and its spin-offs have sold more than 100 million copies worldwide. The UK’s games industry is now bigger than either its cinema or its music.

Yet the medium’s birth in Thatcher’s Britain was almost accidental. While politicians championed computers like the BBC Micro and the ZX Spectrum as engines of learning, it was left to a grassroots culture of amateur programmers to unlock their true potential. And from bedrooms and classrooms across the country, a brilliant profusion of innovative and idiosyncratic games soon emerged – propelling their young creators to fame, riches and, eventually, a place on the world stage.

This is the story of those teenage coders – tracing their journey from the first home computers to the age of the smartphone. A mix of oddball characters, programming miracles and moral panics, Grand Thieves & Tomb Raiders reveals how the unique history of British computing led to some of the greatest games of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A breathless recent history! 13 Nov 2012
By pb14
Format:Hardcover
This does exactly what it says on the tin, which is a breathless rattle through the history of British Computer Games, which doesn't sound very exciting but ends up being occasionally as thrilling as the adventures of their cover star. As a disinterested gamer I can still match my memory to some of the highlights here, Elite, GTA and Tomb Raider. The book is helped by this being more than a parochial history, the peculiar development of home computing (the BBC computing project and the dirt cheap Spectrum) created a load of enthusiasts which fuelled a bedroom revolution and later some of the best world-beating games. So there are tales of nerds vs the boardroom, but there is also some interesting discussion in how the technology developed which works no matter how good your knowledge of the subject is.

The book also sadly feels like it may also have been written at the end of this epoch, these early advantages having been almost run down. Its a great read however involved you are in gaming, the authors have a knack of describing games honestly, but also in the context of their times. There is even a fun "code it yourself" version of Snake at the end. Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars A great reminder of the glory 8bit gaming days 14 Dec 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this nostalgic trip down memory lane; transported back to mid 80's 8bit gaming, bedroom coding, hours spent typing in listings etc.

I'd thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history and evolution of the British video games industry

5.0 out of 5 stars Great multi-decade account 30 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book details the whole span of Britain's games industry, from the late 70's all the way through to 2012. The rise and decline of all the great names are in there (Acorn, Sinclair, Codemasters, Ocean, DMA Design, Imagine and plenty more). It's hard to think of anything the authors didn't cover.

The title is somewhat misleading, as whilst there are whole chapters dedicated to GTA and Tomb Raider, they are far from the focus of the book.

An essential read for any games enthusiasts who grew up in the 80s!
