About the Director
Ron Howard made his directorial debut and wrote the script for this car chase collage. A rich heiress elopes to Las Vegas with her boyfriend in a stolen Rolls-Royce, prompting her father to offer a reward for her return. The promise of the reward motivates a cross-country chase and spectacular crashes.

Despite the fact this movie did not win any awards it will be a great movie to look back on when looking at Ron Howard's career. It’s well directed, has a fast pace and ultimately has a simple story line with a light feel to it
The basic story is about Sam (Ron Howard) and Paula (Nancy Morgan), who are a couple, who drive to Las Vegas in a Paula’s dad’s stolen car (Rolls Royce) to get married. Once they are on the road an enormous chase ensues as follows:
1) Paula’s ex-boyfriend Colin (Paul Linke) offers a local radio station $10,000 reward for Paula’s safe return to him.
2) Colin’s mother (Marion Ross) offers an $10,000 reward for his return.
3) Soon over a dozen people including the a couple of auto mechanics, police, a farmer, some cool Latinos, a bible seller and the mafia are hot in pursuit.
In each situation too a car is stolen multiplying the number of ‘grand theft autos’.
It’s fast and furious as soon everything ends up at a demolition derby. But the best thing is that the film keeps its rapid pace by staying light and does not go too serious. Everything is done cheap and at the end of the day is provides B-movie entertainment.
Grand Theft Auto is one of the better car chase comedies of the 1970’s. It is a very light on real drama but then again the director (Ron Howard) probably did not expect it to be a blockbuster. It's a good movie that will keep you entertained for 83 minutes. The only downside is that the film is presented full screen.

Ron Howard wrote, starred and directed this 1977 riot of a film. It follows the exploits of eloping couple Sam and Paula,on the run from her angry parents who want her to marry rich boy Colin... Having stolen her fathers Rolls Royce they head off to Vegas with a $25000 bounty on their heads and an indignant Colin hot on their heels. When Colin's mother puts a further $25000 up for her son's safe return and the local radio adds to the frenzy by sending a helicopter to report on the progress; a prolonged road chase ensues with every man and his dog intent on claiming the reward!
WHAT CAN I SAY?.
This is a classic film and as a directional début is great, the film has nothing to do with the game which a lot of people think it is but don't let that put you off
Instead of saying the film has nothing to do with the game, we should be saying the game has taken a lot from the film.
The car wrecks sometimes happen for no real reason, but they are all brilliantly done. Appropriately, the action reaches it's climax at a demolition derby outside Vegas.
GRAND THEFT AUTO is exactly what it was intended to be, an entertaining comedy action drive-in movie.
Nancy Morgan and Ron Howard has wonderful chemistry as the eloping couple. and the cast really inhibit their roles with a great deal of OOMPH...
This film is fun fun fun
Never have I seen this many wrecks; dozens and dozens, maybe more it is The King of car crash films ..

Rubbish but worth watching
I like crappy old B-movies and this definitely fits into that category. There's some poor dialogue, a very thin story centered around 2 star-crossed lovers and a load of cars. Read more
