i first heard of grand magus when
i saw them support orange goblin at the garage along with roadsaw.
they`re a great stoner doom band from sweden with big swirling riffs for every doom fan to enjoy.
If you enjoy bands like spiritual beggars or goatsnake then this is definately one for you !!!!!!!

Grand Magus are a supremely powerful band, although they aren't particularly heavy in the fashions of heavy metal. This album is a masterpiece. The vocals are very strong and not growly like CoF, whilst the guitars are downtuned giving a hugely satisfying ballsy sound that you can feel in your chest! The main beauty comes from the riffs that are played practically constantly over the rhythem guitar without ever sounding out of place. This is for any metal fan in the world, its fantastic!

HASH(0x92b0d6a8) out of 5 stars Have you ever heard these guys? 24 Sept. 2006
By beast of the sausage meat - Published on Amazon.com

I hadn't, until they came up on the recommendations list, but after reviewing the album art (huge beards can never be bad) and the samples, I had to listen to this. I'm not disappointed.

The noise these guys seem to be shooting for is one of a largely "stoner rock" kind of bass-driven and somewhat melodic underpinning largely riff-driven rock. Nothing special, you might think, but it is the guitar/vocalist that makes this CD exceptional. There are enough "air guitar" moments to satisfy any cravings you might have, and the riffs are also catchy enough to maintain ones interest. That Grand Magus aren't bigger is a huge surprise.

One other thing that people seem to comment on that I agree with are their thoughts on the vocalists voice - he really does sing. Not growling, or howling; but singing. And it works! It really does. I've not as yet got any other CD's by this group, but rest assured I will. Go on, give it a listen. You'll not regret it.

HASH(0x92b0d6fc) out of 5 stars Great Band, Great Music! 2 Jan. 2010

I bought this after buying Iron Will (their most recent release). That disc is in the top 10 all time for me, so I went back and started buying their older stuff. It is different, not as "classic" metal as Iron Will is, but still outstanding.

This guy actually sings, not growls, like other singers today. Guitars are great. All the tracks are keepers.

Enjoy!

HASH(0x92b10240) out of 5 stars I love this band! 13 Feb. 2008
By Anti-Lucas - Published on Amazon.com

If you sampled the tracks for this album and thought like I did that there is no way the entire album can sound this good, you need to buy it and you'll be blown away. This is one of a handful of albums among my collection of over 600 that doesn't have a dull or wasted moment. Heavy and melodic all the way through, the rumbling baseline and JB's voice make it addictive as hell. Although I bought dozens of new releases in 2007, this 2002 album is by far my favorite of 2007. After you buy this check out Grand Magus' "Monument" and anything by Spiritual Beggars is can't miss, JB also sings for Spiritual Beggar's two most recent albums "On Fire" and "Demons".

HASH(0x92b0db04) out of 5 stars Remastered debut with two new tracks 23 April 2014

Grand Magus are getting the word out with their newest great album "Triumph and Steel", enough so to warrant my investigating their catalogue. No place like the debut to start, I always say. This three piece powerhouse is a fine blend of traditional metal in the vein of Judas Priest, Viking metal in their lyrical content, and a touch of doom to flesh out their sound on "Grand Magus". The doom influence would be less present on the newest CD.
Where some metal outfits like Manowar take themselves oh so seriously to the point of being a joke, GM are not laughing. Singer/guitarist JB has a fine voice, and sings, not grunts. His riffs are there for a reason, and you have no doubt he means what he plays and sings. The rhythm section rivals other great three piece bands like High on Fire who are so full of sound a fourth member would be redundant.
The trend in metal is veering backward as musicians are discovering melody after a few decades of basically trashing anything that might resemble structure or a hook, with the exceptions of only the top notch outfits, with the others wearing goofy hair and screaming over blast beats and one note songs. That's called metalcore or screamo, and it's past time for it to be dead-o. I love my metal, but it better have some chops or I ain't interested. Fortunately, Grand Magus easily meet the standards and then some. Tough, smart and no screwing around. That's metal.
