Reviews

Filmed on 9 November 2010 at the historic Orpheum Theater in Memphis, TN, this stunning show captures Styx performing their classic multi-platinum seventies albums The Grand Illusion and Pieces Of Eight live in their entirety for the first time. These iconic albums established Styx as a globally successful rock band and defined the AOR genre for a generation of Americans. These new live performances perfectly portray the power, songwriting skill and musical virtuosity that are synonymous with Styx throughout their career and with these groundbreaking albums in particular.

Styx perform to perfection their two classic (and best imho) albums from the late seventies from start to finish with spectacular precision making you feel it was 1977 again! This is not just some nostalgia trip though, the music stands up just as well today as it did back in the day. A fabulous dvd.

If you were a fan of Styx back in the 70's, you have to get this DVD. I wasn't sure what to expect, but the quality of picture, sound and performance is top class. Of the original Styx that I remember, we still have Tommy Shaw, James Young and (on some songs) Chuck Panozzo on bass guitar (his twin brother John, the original drummer died of liver failure in the mid-90's). The guy who has replaced Dennis de Young does an admirable job both vocally and on keyboards.

The Grand Illusion and Peices of Eight happen to be my two favourite Styx albums, so I was immediately transported back to Hammersmith Odeon, and a summer night in 1979 when I last saw this band live. To play two vintage albums in the order they were recorded and back to back, without a single bum note is quite an achievement, and they pull this off brilliantly. My personal favourites are The Grand Illusion, Castle Walls and Pieces of Eight, but it's hard to fault any of the performance. If you were into Styx thirty years ago I don't see how you can't love this DVD, so treat yourself!

This bluray really portrays the power of the band. Although others have criticized the cinematography, ihave no issue with. The sound and picture are excellent, and although it isn't Denis DeYoung as one of the leads you coun't ask for a better sound.

This is one of the only concert videos I have watched all the way through. If you like Styx, you will love this.

2 classic albums performed back to back live, by a classic band. A stunning performance brilliant songs performed with passion and fire,There are a number of poppy songs but gee when they rock out especially "Queen Of Spades", "Miss America" and one of my faves "Man In The Wilderness" can't get any better great stuff

Seemed like I was back in 1978, If you like AOL Rock you'll love this, perhaps one of the great Corporate Rock Bands. Can't remember how many records they have sold, but it's in the millions and if you watch this Concert you'll see why. I liked the idea of playing both Albums back to back, the Keyboard player can be forgiven for being "over the top " at times but I'll forgive him for his great voice and keyboard skills. The BluRay format is superb bring out picture and sound stunningly. Heartily recommended.
