Book Description

Ben's favourite person in the whole, wide world is Gran, and Gran's favourite person is Ben. There is only one problem -- they live a whole, wide world apart. Now Gran is coming to visit. But with rocky rivers, scorching deserts and seasick cats to contend with, will she ever reach Ben's in time for tea? The split page design allows children to follow Gran's amazing journey at the same time as watching Ben busy making his preparations for her visit.

About the Author

Gillian Shields is a new talent in picture books, who has already received wide acclaim with this, her first book. Gillian uses her experience as a drama teacher as inspiration for her writing of both picture books and longer children's fiction. She lives in Sussex with her husband and two children.

Katharine McEwen studied Illustration at Kingston University and then spent two years in France as an artist in residence. Her distinctively witty characterisation has already received wide attention, for example in her work with Allan Ahlberg on the Gaskitt Family series for Walker, the first title in which, THE MAN WHO WORE ALL HIS CLOTHES, won the Children's Book Award for Best Illustrated Book to Read Aloud.

A beautifully illustrated and fantastic story for little ones. How wonderful to have Gran as your favourite person even if she lives on the other side of the world. And what an epic journey she took to have tea with Ben. We don't want to give the story away but we love the sea-sick cats.
This is definitely going to be the 2004 birthday/ Christmas presents for all my god-children, nieces and newphews.
Happy Travelling.

Great story with beautiful and amusing illustrations; and a wonderful message. My child loved it.

Love this book! As a primary school teacher I use it with classes aged 4-7 and tie it in with Grandparents' DayGeography, relationships, sequencing. The children can all respond to the relationship between Ben and Gran, the fun of corresponding, how hard it is to wait and they love the illustrations of daring Gran on her week-long journey from "over there" to "over here" to visit Ben.

My children borrowed this book from the local library and enjoyed it so much that I've brought them a copy for Christmas. I think that it appeals to them as they have a Gran who doesn't live locally. So reading a story which involves Gran having one big adventure on the way to see Ben, who is preparing for her visit is very exciting for them.

Fantastic for TCKs 3 July 2013

We really enjoyed reading this book which is about a Gran who is far away and would travel at any lengths to get there! Great pictures and story line. A must for gran's who are about to visit their grandkids in another country that feels far far away. A TCK must buy.
