Amazon.co.uk Review

The most eagerly awaited PlayStation 2 game of 2001 is finally here. It's about motor racing, it's called Gran Turismo 3: A Spec, and it's utterly superb. Much has been made of the appearance of Sony's flagship title on the PS2. Detractors have complained it has fewer cars than GT2, it only has a couple of extra tracks and it's really no more than an update. But then it's easy to knock it before you've tried it. To be fair the detractors have a point and for the seriously hardcore driving fan "only" 183 possible vehicles might be a bit of an issue, but to the vast majority of racing gamers GT3 will be a fabulous gaming experience and will really prove what the PlayStation 2 is capable of. In essence, GT3 is a series of sub-games combined by a motoring theme. There are driving licences to gain which open access to racing events, which in turn provide cash to buy bigger and better motors. There's a full arcade section in which it's possible to choose from a pre-determined selection of cars and tracks on time trials, first-past-the-post and free-run races and there's a huge section of game time devoted to tuning and maintaining your garage of racing machines. Graphically, this is the best-looking PS2 title yet. It's crisp, smooth, frighteningly quick and there's no invisible scenery in evidence. Lighting effects are truly awesome--wait 'til you see the setting sun of Laguna Seca--and the engine sounds are ear-burstingly impressive. Control is smooth and precise; the DualShock controller is used to good effect but playing with a suitable steering wheel adds a whole new dimension to things. A number of top-name bands have their musical wares shoehorned into the soundtrack so expect the company of Ash, Feeder and others to keep you company during the long hours of gawping at the TV. Playing GT3, you get the feeling that the PS2 is finally starting to show its worth. This is professional games software of the highest quality. Buy it now. You know you want to. --Chris Russell

Product Description

The third title of the Gran Turismo series takes full advantage of the PlayStation 2 game engine, which is capable of rendering about 20-million polygons per second--roughly 10 times the number of total polygons of the series' previous instalment, Gran Turismo 2. Real-time lighting forces your eyes to adjust to changing conditions, such as when a car rounds a turn and the sun comes out from behind a building to cause glare on the windshield. This makes the game harder, but more realistic. Heat rises off the ground and mist swirls around vehicles as they make their way across the racetrack.

Gran Turismo 3 also features more than 100 distinct cars, each with different statistics, including the Subaru Impreza Rally, Dodge Viper GTS-R and Mazda's RX-7 RS. Computer-controlled opponents benefit from enhanced artificial intelligence; they don't act like baby ducks following their mother, but instead respond to other cars, the course and the conditions in much the same way that real drivers would. Pressure a car, and it will pressure you back; cut one off in the early part of the race, and expect to receive similar treatment down the course. They don't drive perfectly, either; some will spin out and make other mistakes over the course of a race.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bl***y hell! what a game!, 31 July 2001

This review is from: Gran Turismo 3: A Spec (PS2) (Video Game)
First we had GT1, jaw droppingly amazing for the PS1, loads of cars, innovative features, i.e License tests, tune ups and even the car wash! Then along came GT2, polished graphics, even more cars, not to forget the License tests and the kick ass sound tracks as with the original.

Step up GT3 for the PS2 and all I can say is, absolutely amazing. this is what the hardware was made for. OK, let's not get carried away here, the game does have it's flaws, but nothing is perfect and right now there is nothing to rival this game. The detail is just out of this world every single aspect of racing is here in GT3. Awsome textures and lighting affects the heat haze off the cars and the sun shining off the tarmac is incredible. racing now is fierce and there is no such thing as an easy race anymore, which adds to the excitement.

The best driving sim around from the people that brought you the game that set the standard, a hard act to follow for the competition. Buy this game!

5.0 out of 5 stars So real you can smell the clutch burn!!, 18 Jan 2004

First of all only a quick reveiw. Secondly people moan because damage was taken out of this game. Now for many people that have played the gran turismo games then they would relise that there are races that can take up to 2 hours to finish. Now if you were on the last lap of this race in 1st place and you hit a wall at 150mph and wrote your car off then i think you would be well peeved. That is why sony decided to remove the damage psyics of the game to allow for this game to be finished. The graphics are amazing and the sounds are brill, gamplay is kept at a good pace with races for novices and pro racers. Now 99.9% of people that play this game drive a car and they still love this game like i do.

5.0 out of 5 stars better than the rest, 19 July 2001

Well, now we have the PS2 I suppose we'll all have to go out and buy the game the console's made for. Thats right GT3. Yeah, the plots the same as GT and GT2, but hey, it's a racing game - there are only so many variations you can have and this has them all. Graphics are fantastic, mist and dust rising off the road, you can almost see the mirror finish of the cars. Okay, it's got less cars than GT2, but, these are all better finished with 10 times the detail. This is the new benchmark for racing games. Graphics are what it's all about and this games has them in abundance. GT3 is the reason why I bought the PS2. The response of the cars are better, especially with the touch sensitive controller, now you can gently brake by touching the control button with light pressure or give it large off the line by mashing the buttons hard. The next step is go and by a Skyline R34 Vspec - and I don't have the cash so this IS the next best thing. Go and buy it you know it makes sense.
