Good road map but needs updating,

I bought this road map tentatively given the reviews on here but found that it was the best road map available overall (or the best out of the bunch I had?!). We were given free road maps in Gran Canaria (at the airport and hotel) but none of these seemed to have any identification of the motorway names/numbers nor junctions, nor had the level of detail this had (tons of roads were missing on the others). I ended up solely using this map on our holiday and we did a lot of driving (the circumference as well as the diameter of the island) and we managed to get about fine. There are quirks with the map though that you do have to be philosphical about and use it to the best you can, for example, the map isn't up to date (it's a few years old) and there are a few minor roads missing but this was generally when we were off the beaten track rather than in main areas. One thing which helped us a great deal once we knew (a local told us), the junctions highlighted on the map aren't proper junctions as we would know it. They are in fact distance markers. For example, what you think are junctions on the map for the GC-1 motorway are in fact kilometer distance markers from Las Palmas. This corresponds to the actual junctions on the motorways, which are all done as distances. Therefore, because there are so many junctions off the GC-1 motorway, not every junction (i.e. distance marker) is noted on this map. This helped us a great deal once we knew and was a case of paying careful attention of the distances given on the motorway to ensure you came off at the right junction (distance marker) to the town you wanted to get to and used the few that were listed on this map as a guide.

Better than nothing but not a great map.,

We used this map quite a bit during our recent visit to GC but we were quite disappointed and found we needed to use the much smaller but often more accurate maps in the guidebooks to supplement it. A number of perfectly usable roads are missing, some of the motorway junction numbers are wrong (which caused us problems until we realised what was happening!) and overall the detail is not great. The map is quite large but a significant amount of it is information which you would expect to find in a guidebook. As we had also bought two guidebooks and a walking/car tour guide we really didn't need this, what we wanted was a realiable and detailed map. This wasn't it!

A scale 1:150,000 makes it fine for holidays, walkers would require more detail. It also has illustrated recommended sights and travel information. Larger scale maps of the major resorts would be an improvement. If you are hiring a car you will need a larger scale of the towns but for a week in the sun holidays it is ideal.
