The book includes chapters on-
* clause and sentence structure
* word classes
* punctuation
* the grammar of literary style
Grammatical terms are explained in an accessible manner and through close attention to the way language is used in specific extracts from literary and non-literary writing- from Ruskin’s Modern Painters to the Collins’ Bird Guide. Engaging and work-related writing and analysis activities in each chapter help to enhance the reader’s knowledge of new grammatical terms and show their relevance to the world of work.
This book, like the others in the Speak-Write series, is designed to be used both by groups working within a degree course or by students working alone.
Grammar and Writing and the three other books in the Speak-Write Series, Writing with Style, Speaking Your Mind, and Making Your Case, are the result of three years of research, teaching, design and development undertaken by the nationally-acclaimed Speak-Write Project. This project, funded by HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council in England) through its Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning, was established to provide groundbreaking teaching materials to advance the speaking, writing and grammatical skills of first-year humanities undergraduates.
Rebecca Stott, Peter Chapman, Kim Landers and Val Scullion are all based in the Department of English, Anglia Polytechnic University.
