Product Description

Product Description

Recorded live at The Garage in London on 19th September 1998 when The Coal Porters headlined a Gram Parsons tribute concert. Most tracks are either written by or co-written by Gram Parsons and all were performed by him during his solo career or with The Byrds or The Flying Burrito Bros. A must for the Gram Fan on your block! Note: Three of the Coal Porters on this disc are in Western Electric and the fourth, pedal steel guitarist Rob Childs, now works with comedian Rich Hall.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good pub band doing covers of classic songs 19 Dec 2000
Format:Audio CD
It was recorded live in London by an English band "The Coal Porters", led by an American -Sid Griffen, a Parsons devotee. He has all the right credentials having written the definitive biography of G.P, as well as being the founder of the Long Ryders whose album "Native Sons" was a bit of a classic. Only trouble I am sorry to say, is that this album did nothing for me. They are a good pub band with a lead singer who seemed to be struggling, perhaps you had to be there on the night.
This is one to buy if you are into the minutia of the Gram Parsons legend. I guess it would be best to read the book, or see The Coal Porters live. But you only need to hear the original to know why Gram Parsons is the person they make tribute records to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Return of the Burritos 14 May 2001

If you've ever enjoyed the Flying Burrito Brothers and the late 60's Byrds (w/Gram Parsons and Clarence White), then this is a CD to GRAB!!! It truly is a tribute to Gram, and the seeds that he planted in progressive country. This one is a must have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it, and weep. 3 Jun 2000

I like the Coal Porters better than the Long Ryders. Sid is younger than previous with a big help from young Pat McGarvey. The CPs play GP's tune in exciting arrangements. ....I cannot explain how I feel in English. Anyway, I hope to see them in Japan! And, The Coal Porters is great, amazing, dynamite. I mean it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Burrito Deluxe 27 May 2012
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This was a nice idea for a tribute that turned into a fun and energetic live performance by Sid Griffin and his newest band, the Coal Porters. If you are a fan of Gram Parsons and the music he recorded as a solo artist and with the Flying Burrito Brothers, you might find this "tribute" album of interest. Most die-hard fans will, of course, prefer the original versions, but Sid and his band do a smash-up job of covering these beloved songs. You know he's a fan and he and the band show proper respect and passion when performing Gram's tunes. Some obvious choices, and a few surprises, such as the sterling cover of "(Sweet) Mental Revenge" that Sid's other band, the Long Ryders, also recorded. The only thing I didn't like about this recording was Sid's overuse of "Thank You" and "You are so Kind" between each and every song. Enough already! But that's a minor criticism of an otherwise excellent live album.
