Product Description

Chandos' Grainger Edition brings yet another cornucopia of delights delivered with indefatigable dedication and twinkling charisma by Richard Hickox and the BBC Philharmonic. The formula is the same as on this team's first and second volumes of Grainger's orchestral music, with tried-and-trusted nuggets such as Green Bushes and Colonial Song (both given here in particularly lavish orchestrations from 1905-06 and 1919 respectively) sitting cheek by jowl alongside genuine rarities like The Merry King (based on a folk-tune from West Sussex and boasting a seductively ornate piano contribution) and the amazingly colourful English Dance No.1 (a riot of a piece which prompted Gabriel Fauré to exclaim: "It's as if the total population were a-dancing!"). Perhaps the most startlingly original items here were originally conceived for wind band, namely the bracingly tangy Hill Song No.2 and that ambitious, extraordinarily entitled essay The Power of Rome and the Christian Heart (which also draws on material from the first movement of Grainger's glorious Danish Folk Song Suite). Chandos' thrillingly realistic sonics fairly leap from the loudspeakers. All told, a huge tonic and not to be missed. --Andrew Achenbach

5.0 out of 5 stars Look, no hands..... 30 April 2014
Format:Audio CD
The Immovable “Do” or “The Ciphering “C” has a high drone on C that sounds throughout the movement. The piece, not based on folk song (as many of Grainger’s occasional pieces are), weaves an impressively complex harmonic richness around the held note. Lewis Foreman has called it “the longest pedal note in all music”. Grainger first had the idea in 1933 when a note stuck down on his harmonium, but spend the next six years developing the idea, and ended up publishing it in 1940. Like many Grainger pieces there are various scoring options (he called this “elastic scoring”), including chorus, full orchestra, strings or various wind groups – it can even be played on the piano, standing up without the offending note. I was involved in a performance where the harmonium player, placing a weight on the note, mimed to the other performers (hopefully out of site of the audience): “Look, no hands”.

5.0 out of 5 stars ...Enter the English countryside in all its splendor... 3 Oct 2009
By Neal Schultz - Published on
Format:Audio CD
This CD continues the fine work of Richard Hickox and his forces at the BBC Philharmonic. As a seeming second-tier English composer probably because he was a producer mostly smaller scaled works and not for the finely crafted mini tone poem-styled approach to his composition I for one continue to be amazed how much Grainger's music grows on me. Now one caveat (as perhaps the other reviewer did not understand) if you do not have a taste for English classical music Grainger whose music is quintessentially "English" will not appeal to your tastes. But for the rest of us who periodically enjoy our tea and crumpets in tinier bite sized morsels then there is no greater master of this niche of the English music than Grainger. There is very little to complain about this CD....sound is well balanced and Hickox's conducting is flawless.

Strongly recommended****
