Product Description

Product Description

The cornerstone of Graham’s Port is the company’s famed flagship vineyard, Quinta dos Malvedos. It is acknowledged to be one of the Upper Douro’s finest properties, and indeed the entire vineyard has the maximum ‘A’ rating attributed by the Douro’s regulatory authority. The wines from Malvedos form the backbone of Graham’s renowned Vintage Ports in ‘declared’ years. In the majority of the interim years the finest wines from the Quinta are bottled and offered as Quinta dos Malvedos Vintage Ports. The Quinta embraces the steep gradients that mark the confluence of the Tua and Douro rivers. The vineyard’s north bank location provides its vine terraces with a south-facing aspect, ensuring prolonged exposure to the sun. This results in excellent ripening of the grapes during the growing season, essential to the production of first-class Port. The very consistent climate in this part of the valley is reflected in the supreme quality of the wines produced.
The vineyard covers 70 hectares, out of the Quinta’s total area of 108 hectares. A major replanting programme was carried out through the 1980’s and the average age of the vines now ranges from 20 years for the ‘modern’ terraces, to well over 45 years for the older walled terraces. In 2005, 8 hectares of old mixed vineyards were replanted with Touriga Nacional, one of the finest varieties for Port and especially important for Vintage Port. Around 95% of the vineyard is planted in varietal batches, allowing each variety to achieve optimum ripeness and to be subsequently picked and vinified separately. The yields at Malvedos are amongst the lowest of any major wine-producing region in the world and ensure outstanding quality.
Vinification: the Malvedos winery was refurbished in readiness for the 2000 vintage with the installation of three of Graham’s groundbreaking ‘robotic’ lagares. The make-up of the Graham’s 2000 Vintage Port included a 36% component of robotic lagar trodden wines whilst for the 2003 Vintage Port, this proportion had increased to 78%. The exceptional ratings awarded in blind tastings to both the Graham’s 2000 and 2003 Vintages provides ample indication that the very substantial investment by the Symington family in this new technology has been more than vindicated.
The winery at Malvedos also retains its three original stone lagares where conventional treading still takes place, as well as with two ‘plunger tanks’ where a paddle gently pushes the cap of skins down into the fermenting juice below. The three vinification methods available makes this winery the most versatile in the Douro Valley. It allows Graham’s winemakers great scope and capability to craft the finest wines possible. Tasting profile of Quinta dos Malvedos: floral characteristics, opulent black berry fruit aromas and super concentrated rich fruit, backed by well balanced tannins, these are the hallmark of this vineyard’s wines. They are therefore wines in the classic mould with the innate quality and potential for long-term ageing.

Product Description

The quality of the wines from the Malvedos vineyard is such that in Vintage declarations these wines provide the main structure for Grahams classic Vintage Ports. In most of the interim years, the wines from Malvedos will merit bottling as a single estate, or single quinta Vintage Port from a single harvest.

Grahams Malvedos Vintage Ports admirably show the Grahams house style with their expressive floral characteristics, opulent black berry fruit flavours and racy flair. They are usually more approachable when young than classic Vintage Ports and therefore make an excellent alternative to the latter while one waits for these to fully mature.

Grahams Malvedos Vintage Ports have won a simply astonishing collection of awards at the worlds major international wine competitions over recent years, clearly outperforming other producers. In the International Wine Challenge alone, Malvedos Vintage Ports have won an impressive (and unrivalled) 5 gold and 11 silver medals.

The 1988 Malvedos was the first ever Port (and in fact, the first ever Portuguese wine) to be ranked in the prestigious Wine Spectators annual Top 100 wines of the world classification. It also won gold medals for two consecutive years at the London International Wine Challenge.

1999 was the largest vintage since 1996 and turned out to be a useful vintage for the trade with some small quantities of outstanding single quinta wines. Not a general declaration.

Gorgeous bouquet redolent of chocolate, mint and spice. Luxurious and lusty palate, showing cassis and layers of blackcurrant and black
plum. Big and bold but in a very polished, attractive manner.

Great product. Delivery was very quick and the product came well packaged to avoid any breakages. Bought as a present for someone, and the box makes it a very nice gift (this did also mean that I didn't get to taste any, unfortunately!). Would order from this supplier again.

I purchased this product as a gift for my friend but he did not come around to drinking this until July. When we opened it the cork disintegrated into many bits that could not be removed, it seemed like the cork was of not good quality. This made the product undrinkable and we ended up throwing it away. I would recommend you proceed to buying this with caution. It would be wrong to say that the actual port did not taste well, as the slight amount which I was able to taste seemed to be very nice but it was not possible to drink.

I think you pay extra for the wooden box but just went for it anyway as it's xmas and I wanted to try a port that was purchased frequently. On opening it I could tell the cork was a little soft, and with each attempt at removing it, I found it crumbling to easy and ended up with half of it (broken into little bits) left in the bottle.
Not the end of the world - I can sift it each time but it does kinda spoil the experience.
The port itself is average for my expectations. But I am very inexperienced with port - I purchased it to see if I would enjoy it.
Would I buy it again. For a fair review and the benefit of others then I should say yes. Just feel a little let down with the - they should have mastered this surely.
