Product Description

Product Description

Graham Roberts is a true football legend. Utterly uncompromising both on and off the pitch for Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Rangers, Roberts had a talent which was the envy of many. Now he tells the full story of his incredible career and also of the high profile court cases which he took on and won. Robbo's always been a winner. He became the most expensive player in non-league history when he signed from Weymouth for £100,000. At Spurs he won two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup and 6 England caps. He lost three teeth in the epic 1981 3-2 FA Cup Final win over Man City following a clash with team-mate Chris Hughton but refused to come off despite doctor's orders. And, famously, he put Arsenal striker Charlie Nicholas in the stand. When Graham Roberts fell out with new Spurs manager David Pleat, he headed north of the border to become a key part of the Souness revolution at Rangers. Roberts soon became a cult-hero at Ibrox with his supporters prepared to do anything for him . . . even organising a vigilante style attack on the Chinese carry-out delivery driver who broke into his house! Off the pitch, Roberts found himself in court after conducting the crowd in a rendition of 'The Sash', alongside team-mates Terry Butcher and Chris Woods and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie, after an explosive Old Firm clash at Ibrox. At Chelsea, he was also embroiled in a row over cash with Ken Bates and he sent shockwaves through Scottish football when Clyde beat Celtic in the Scottish cup, a magnificent result that was soon overshadowed by a bitter internal dispute which would rip the club apart. Graham Roberts - Hard As Nails is the incredible story of one of football's legendary hard men, and it's a story as uncompromising as the man himself.

Very good book 14 Dec 2011
Format:Hardcover
I read a lot of sports autobiographies and this one is very good. It is hard hitting and includes his feelings about some people in the game who he does not like. This is refreshing as you normally get a blow by blow account of games played without the forthright views on the people involved.
I think football fans of a certain age who remember Roberts as a player will enjoy this book.

Ignore the naysayers! 26 Jan 2009
Format:Hardcover
Just like Roberts's football, this book is hard-hitting, to-the-point, and, most importantly, exciting. Recounting his career in football, from his time at Weymouth to his time at Spurs and Rangers, Roberts doesn't hold back on all the gory details of his career. Reading about his time at Spurs brought back some fantastic memories, the highlight being the 1984 UEFA Cup Final.

Ignore some of the other reviews - they wouldn't know a great read if it came and hit them on the head!

An interesting player 3 April 2009
Format:Hardcover
The reviews of this do seem to split between English and Scottish readers. In some cases the Scottish "readers" haven't actually read the book. Decide for yourselves whether you consider it necessary to read a book in order to review it. As a Spurs fan in the era described I found it fascinating. Lots of interesting stories about the players I remembered. There possibly are some factual inaccuracies, as in any autobiography, but the descriptions of the Spurs days ring true.

The fact that he can no longer get a job in management suggests he was as uncompromising a manager as he was a player. His descriptions of the tactics used to intimidate oppostion players is an eye opener. "The beautiful game"? I don't think so.

Worth a read, though if you saw him play at any of his clubs.

A good book, from Robbo the hard man. A little to much moaning is a little bit negative.

the truth would help
I am suprised that he is not a fisherman with the truth being stretched so much and down right lies but then again he has to make a living but this should go into fantasy

This is probably the worst book i have ever read. All he does is moan about everything he has done in football, and appears to by more fiction than fact.
